MATH 4

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
a. recognize different types of real-life problems that involve whole numbers
b. use the order operations in solving mathematical problems
c. reflect on the importance and relevance of whole numbers in everyday life.

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
A. Preparation
 Prayer
Everyone, please stand up and let us pray. -Our Father…

 Greetings
Good morning, everyone! -Good morning, ma’am!

How are you today? -We are doing good ma’am.

That’s good to hear.

 Checking of attendance
Please take your seats and get ready for
the roll call.
When I call your name, say your favorite
number if your present. Okay? -Okay, ma’am.
(starts the roll call)

 Classroom Management
Before we start our class, I have rules
here for you to follow in this class.

Rule 1: Always bring your math

notebook, pencil, and eraser to class.

Rule 2: Listen carefully when the teacher

explains a new concept or skill.

Rule 3: Show your work and check your

answers when solving math problems.

Did you get all the rules class?

-Yes, ma’am!
Okay, good.
 Review
Can anyone tell me what we covered in - Um, sure! We learned about addition with
our previous lesson? regrouping. You know, when we carry over the
extra units to the next column.

Excellent! And how do we do that? Can - Sure! Let’s say we’re adding 345 and 278. We
you demonstrate with an example? add the units first: 5 + 8 is 13, so we write down 3
and carry over 1. Then, 4 + 7 + 1 is 12, so we
write down 2 and carry over 1 again. Finally, 3 +
2 + 1 is 6. So the answer is 623.

Perfect! You’ve got it. Remember to

practice this at home, everyone. Great job,
class!

B. Awareness
-Okay, ma’am.
I have here a problem class. Let’s solve it
together.

There are 4 Bus Liner A and 1 Bus Liner

B that were hired at 11,445.00Php to take
280 students to the Palarong Pambansa
venue. What was the transportation cost
per pupil?
-The transportation cost per pupil.
What is asked in the problem?
-4 Bus Liner A and 1 Bus Liner B,
What are given?
11,455.00Php paid for hiring one bus,
there are 280 students.

-How many buses were used?

What dare the hidden questions, class?
How much was aid for all buses?

-addition, multiplication, and division.

Now, what operations are we going to
use?

Very good!
Now here is the mathematical sentence.
[(4+1) x 11,445] ÷ 280 = N (the
transportation per pupil)
-the PMDAS rule
Since the number sentence has more than
one operation, we will apply what rule in
order to properly solve for N?

Yes, we are going to apply PMDAS.

[(4 + 1) x 11,455] ÷ 280 = N
(5 x 11,455) ÷ 280 = N
57,225 ÷ 280 = N
204.375 = N
-204.375Php
Therefore, each pupil’s transportation cost
is?

Good! Approximately 204.40. -Maybe, No, Yes

Do you think the answer is reasonable,

class?

Let’s try to check if it’s correct.

60,000 ÷ 300 = 200
204.375 is near 200. Therefore, the
answer is reasonable.

C. Activity
Now, try to solve this problem with
your seatmate using the same procedure
we did earlier.

Carla receives a daily allowance of

60.00Php. She spends 22.00Php for
transportation, 20.00Php for snacks, and
saves the rest. How much does she save
in a day?

I’ll give you 15 minutes to finish the

activity.

-Yes, ma’am.
D. Analysis
So, in solving word problems involving
whole numbers, we can follow the four
step process formulated by Polya.
Step 1: Understand the Problem. -The amount she saves in 21 days.
Step 2: Make a plan
Step 3: Carry out the plan -Daily allowance of 60.00Php, spends 22.00Php
Step 4: Look back. for transportation, and 20.00Php for snacks.

Let’s follow this 4-step process to solve

the problem easier. -How much does she save in a day?

Is everybody done? -Addition, subtraction, and multiplication

Okay, now let us check if your answers

are correct.

So, what is asked in the problem?

What are given?

What do you think is the hidden question

in the problem?

Okay, now what operations we will use?

Very good!

Here is the operation sentence,

60 – (22 + 20) = The amount she saves in
a day
[60 – (22 + 20)] x 21 = The amount she
saves in 21 days

Now, let’s solve using these mathematical

sentences. Always remember to solve first -Yes
the operation inside the parenthesis.

60 – (22 + 20)
= 60 – 42
= 18
Therefore, Carla saves 18Php in a day.

[60 – (22 + 20)] x 21

= 18 x 21
= 378 - Carla saves 378.00Php in 21 days.

Is the answer correct?

Let’s try to check if it’s correct.

All we have to do, is add the expenses
and the amount she saves in a day.

22 + 20 + 18 = 60 -Yes ma’am!
60 -= 60
(starts counting)
Therefore, how much did Carla saved in
21 days?

E. Awareness
Again, what are the four-step process in - Step 1: Understand the Problem.
solving word problems involving whole Step 2: Make a plan
numbers? Step 3: Carry out the plan
Step 4: Look back.
F. Application

We will have a group activity. I will

group you into 2 groups, the first group
who will finish solving the problem will
receive a mystery reward. Now, are you -(Starts answering)
guys ready?

Okay, now count 1 to 2.

Go to your group.

Here’s the problem that you are going to

solve.

Arnel, Jacque, and Ferdie saved

45,000.00Php together in the bank. Arnel
saved twice as much as Jacque and Ferdie
saved twice as much as the combined
savings of Arnel and Jacque. How much
did each one save?
I will give you 15 minutes to answer the
problem with your group. You may now
start answering.

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Solve the following problems on your 1 whole sheet of paper.
A. Solve for the value of N.
1. 45 ÷ 5 x 3 + 17 – 9 = N
2. (78 – 31 + 33) x 4 ÷ 8 = N
3. 67 – 12 x 4 ÷ 6 + 63 = N
4. 78 ÷ 3 x 9 – 15 + 8 = N
5. 82 + 84 ÷ 6 – 4 x 4 = N

B. Solve each problem.

1. Jonathan works at Star Land. In 30 days, he got 18,000.00Php. How much is left of his
monthly wage if he spends 250.00Php for food and 200.00Php for rent each week?

2. Mrs. Rivera earns 16,390.00Php a month. She allots 4,500.00php for monthly house rent
and miscellaneous expenses, 3,200.00Php for education, and the rest for food. How much
is allotted for food in each week?

V. Assignment
Direction: In your math notebook, solve the following problems.
1. Darwin bought 5 boxes of corned beef. A box contains one and a half dozen cans of corned beef.
If he sold all the corned beef at 45.00Php each, how much did he earn?

2. A vendor bought 360 mangoes for 1,800.00Php. How much should the vendor sell each mango to
earn a profit of 1,440.00Php?
