167,995. Wade, H., (Harrington, J.). Dec. 15, 1920. Grates.-In a chain-grate stoker the use of a rear sprocket shaft is obviated and means are provided for taking up slack in the chains. The grate-bars 10 are mounted on a series of parallel chains 10<a> having central rollers 21 running on tracks 21<a> extending the whole length of the upper strands. The pins 21<b> connecting the chain links carry rollers 21<c>, which, at the rear end of the stoker, run on flanges 51<a> on an end girder 51. The lower strands form pendant sections, and are then guided into lower channels 53 by pivoted shoes 52, the weight of which, with that of the pendant sections, takes up slack in the upper strands.
