背景技术
有线、卫星和广播电视系统向观众提供许多电视频道。通常，观众需要参考印刷的电视节目时间表来确定在特定时间播出的节目。近来，人们开发了能够在观众的电视上显示电视节目信息的交互式电子电视节目指南。

图4表示常规节目指南浏览显示排列。在用户的电视屏幕68上显示将用户的机顶盒调谐到的当前频道(即，用户正在观看的当前频道)的视频。当用户按遥控器上的光标键时，以屏幕68上的覆盖的方式，提供浏览显示70。如图4中的上部屏幕所示，最初，浏览显示70包含当前频道的节目表信息和时间(即频道6和10∶30AM)。如图4中的下部屏幕所示，如果用户按光标键，则并不改变屏幕68上显示的当前频道的视频，但浏览显示70中的节目表信息改变为下一可用频道(即频道7)的信息。如箭头72所示，用户可使用光标键来浏览其他各频道的节目表和时间，而并不干扰屏幕68上显示的当前频道的视频。如果用户定位了一部当前正在播送的感兴趣的节目，则用户可以按遥控器上的“OK”键，这会命令节目指南调谐到该节目的频道。当浏览显示中的节目指南为将来节目时，按“OK”键会命令节目指南提供设置该节目之提示的机会。
图5表示常规翻转显示排列。在屏幕74上显示用户调谐到当前屏幕的视频。当用户按遥控器上的增加或减少按键时，以屏幕74上的覆盖的方式，提供翻转显示76。如图5中的上部屏幕所示，翻转显示76包含当前频道(即频道6)的节目表信息。如图5中的下部屏幕所示，如果用户按频道增加或频道减少键，则屏幕74上显示的当前频道的视频改变为下一可用频道(即频道7)的视频，并且翻转显示76中的节目表信息改变为下一可用频道(即频道7)的节目表信息。
如图4和图5所示，在一种模式(浏览模式)中，节目指南提供一个允许与当前频道不同步的节目表覆盖(浏览显示)，而在另一模式(翻转模式)中，节目指南提供一个其当前频道与覆盖中保持的节目表信息同步的节目表覆盖(翻转显示)。通过使用合适的遥控键(即，用于浏览模式的光标键和用于翻转模式的频道增减键)，用户能够以浏览模式或者以翻转模式操作节目指南。
根据本发明，节目指南提供包含广告的浏览显示和翻转显示。图6表示由节目指南提供的示例浏览显示。在屏幕78上显示用户(如图1的机顶盒48)调谐到的当前屏幕的视频。当用户按合适键，如遥控器光标键62(图3)时，在图1的用户电视设备44上实现的节目指南，以屏幕78(例如，可以为图1中电视52的屏幕)上的覆盖的方式提供浏览显示80。浏览显示80包含广告82，并可以包含标志83。广告82可以为文字、图形(包括动画)和视频。广告82可以为与节目有关的广告，也可以为常规广告，其中与节目有关的广告用于宣传电视节目或频道，而常规广告用于宣传与节目无关的产品和服务。若需要，则广告82可以为用户可选择的(如，使用遥控键)。如果广告82是可选择的，则用户选择广告82时，节目指南可以采取各种操作。广告82的内容可以循环(即，由另一广告周期代替)。可以在广告循环之间提供衰落。
如图6中的上部屏幕所示，当用户按下光标键62而最初启用浏览显示80时，浏览显示80包含当前频道(即频道6)的节目表84和时间。如图6中的下部屏幕所示，如果用户按下光标键62，则并不改变屏幕78上显示的当前频道的视频，但浏览显示80中的节目表84改变为下一可用频道(即频道7)的节目表。如箭头86所示，用户可使用光标键来浏览其他各频道的节目表和时间，而并不干扰屏幕78上显示的当前频道的视频。如果用户利用浏览显示80定位了一个感兴趣的节目，则用户可以按“OK”键64，命令节目指南调谐到该节目的频道。
如图7所示，节目指南可以提供一个浏览显示88，后者允许用户浏览预定在不同于当前时间的时间播送的节目的节目表。箭头键90表示用户可以使用左右箭头光标键62，来命令节目指南显示不同时间的节目表信息92。当浏览显示88中的节目为将来节目时，按“OK”键64会命令节目指南提供一个机会，以便设置该节目之提示或确定录制该节目之时间。正如图6的排列一样，图7的浏览显示88包含广告94。
如果诸如广告82和94之类的广告是可选择的，则可以按图8所示的方式，向浏览显示提供一个可移动的突出显示。如图8中的上部屏幕所示，当图8的浏览显示104为屏幕106上的最初覆盖时(即当用户第一次按光标键64时)，节目指南提供位于节目表110的突出显示108。如果用户按上箭头光标键62，则节目表110改变为下一可用频道的节目表，并且突出显示仍然定位于该列表上。如果用户按下下箭头光标键62，则节目表110并不改变。然而，如图8的中部屏幕所示，突出显示108定位于广告112。如图8的下部屏幕所示，进一步激活下箭头光标键62，会命令节目指南用前一频道的节目表(即频道1的节目表)代替现有节目表110(即频道2的节目表)。当浏览显示如图8的下部屏幕所示时，进一步激活下箭头光标键62将进一步滚动节目表，但并不移动突出显示108。当浏览显示如图8的下部屏幕所示时，激活上箭头光标键62会将突出显示108移回到节目表110，而并不改变节目表110的频道。
允许用户在节目指南中选择诸如广告82和94之类的广告的另一种方法是，提供专用遥控按钮。若需要，则可以使用左右箭头光标键来访问广告(例如，将广告嵌在节目表的左侧和右侧)。
图9表示包含广告98的节目翻转显示96。在屏幕100上显示用户(如图1的机顶盒48)调谐到的当前屏幕的视频。当用户按合适键，如频道增加或频道减少键66(图3)时，以屏幕100上的覆盖的方式提供翻转显示96。如图9中的上部屏幕所示，翻转显示96包含当前频道(即频道6)的节目表102。如图9中的下部屏幕所示，如果用户按下频道增加或频道减少键66，则屏幕100上显示的当前频道的视频改变为下一可用频道(即频道7)的视频，并且翻转显示96中的节目表102改变为下一可用频道(即频道7)的节目表。
本发明的另一方面涉及从屏幕上删除诸如浏览和翻转显示之类的节目表显示。可以在表示用户不再对浏览节目表感兴趣的某个交互时间段(如5分钟)后，删除浏览显示。可以在某个较短时间段(如5秒)后，删除翻转显示(其中每当用户利用频道按键改变频道时，翻转显示都会自动出现)。
节目指南可以使用特殊效果，从屏幕中删除诸如浏览显示和翻转显示之类的节目表显示。图10表示某种特殊效果(垂直滑动)。图10的上部屏幕116表示全屏幕浏览或翻转显示114的覆盖。如图10的中部和下部屏幕116所示，在某个合适时间段后(例如，如果显示114为浏览显示，则在5分钟后，或者如果显示114为翻转显示，则在5秒后)，节目指南平滑地逐滑动去屏幕116的显示114。
图10所示的滑动效果，仅为一种用来从屏幕中删除节目表显示的示例性特殊效果。可以使用任何合适的特殊效果删除此类显示。合适的特殊效果的示例包括滑动、渐隐、压扁、反冲、爆炸等。
图11表示使用上述特殊效果从屏幕中删除节目表显示时所涉及的步骤。在步骤118中，节目指南为用户提供选择所需特殊效果的机会，以便节目指南在删除节目表时使用。用户可以在节目指南中的正确设置菜单中完成此选择。同时为用户提供取消选择或取消使用上述特殊效果的机会。在步骤120中，节目指南在用户电视设备44中的屏幕(即用户的电视屏幕)上，提供诸如翻转显示或浏览显示之类的节目表。在某个合适时间段后(例如，如果显示114为浏览显示，则在5分钟后，或者如果显示114为翻转显示，则在5秒后)，节目指南在步骤122中使用特殊效果，从该屏幕中删除节目表显示(即翻转显示或浏览显示)。节目指南可以在步骤122中使用缺省的特殊效果，或者使用由用户在步骤118中选择的特殊效果。
图12表示另一种包含广告的浏览和翻转显示排列。屏幕124包含一个缩减尺寸的视频窗口126，后者包含用户(如，机顶盒48)调谐到的频道的视频。屏幕124还包含广告128a、128b和128c。屏幕124还可以包含标志130以及区域132，其中区域132包含当前时间和当前频道。可以在与缩减尺寸视频窗口126相邻的屏幕124中，提供节目表134。节目表134可以包含频道信息136、标题信息138和图标140(例如，用于显示分级信息，结束字幕状态等)。
与图6-9所示的浏览和翻转节目表显示区域一样，节目表显示区域142包含一个单一节目表(用于图12之示例中的节目“ER”)，并且可以包含一条或多条广告(若需要的话)。然而，由于视频窗口126的尺寸减少(即，它并未占据整个屏幕)，因此，无需在当前频道上覆盖节目表显示区域142。
节目表显示区域142可以按浏览模式或按翻转模式运行。用户通过激活光标键或其他合适键，启用浏览模式。在浏览模式中进一步使用光标键，会命令节目指南将节目表134改变为新频道的节目表，而并不改变视频窗口126的频道。若需要，可以使用左右箭头光标键来浏览不同时间的节目表。激活“OK”键64会命令节目指南将视频窗口124的频道调谐到当前节目表的频道。通过激活频道增加或减少键抑或其他合适键，用户可以启用翻转模式。在翻转模式中进一步使用频道增加或减少键，会命令节目指南同时改变视频窗口126和节目表134的频道。若需要，可以省略广告128c，以便为列表134和视频窗口126提供更多空间。通过使用特殊(如专用或数字)的遥控按钮，或者使用左右箭头光标键(此时，不使用左右箭头光标键来浏览不同时间的节目表)，用户可以导航到诸如广告128a和128b之类的面板广告中。
如图13所示，诸如图6-9以及图12中节目表显示区域中的广告之类的广告，可以包含视频、文字和图形。若需要，则可在各节目表显示中显示多条广告。
诸如图6-9以及图12中所示广告之类的广告可以为可选择的。通过使用任意合适排列，例如使用专用的遥控导航键，用户可以导航到可选广告。一旦用户导航到指定广告，用户就可以使用“OK”键选择该广告。若需要，则可以使用用于选择广告的其他任何合适技术。
图14表示使用可选广告中涉及的步骤。在步骤144中，节目指南在翻转或浏览显示中提供可选广告。在步骤146中，用户选择广告。在步骤148中，节目指南采取合适操作。如果该广告是针对当前正在播放的电视节目的，则节目指南可以为用户提供调谐到该节目的机会。如果该广告是针对将来节目的，则节目指南可以为用户提供设置该节目之提示的机会。若需要，则节目指南可以为用户提供录制该节目的机会。可以定购按次计费或视频点播(VOD)节目。如果广告是针对特定电视频道的，则选择该广告会命令节目指南为用户提供该频道的节目表。通过选择某些广告，可以请求附加信息(如，有关节目、产品或服务的信息)。如果用户选择涉及小册子和文化请求以及附加信息查询之类的查询，则节目指南在步骤148中处理此类查询。如果用户在步骤146中选择此类广告，则节目指南系统会在步骤148中处理做广告的货物或服务的定购。
上述说明仅仅说明本发明的原理，熟练技术人员可以进行各种更改而并不背离本发明的范围和实质。
Claims (36)
1.一种用来在用户电视设备(44)上实现交互式电视节目指南的系统(30)，该系统包括：
用于为节目指南屏幕(106)提供包含指定频道之视频的交互式电视节目指南的装置(48，52)；
其中所述用于提供节目指南屏幕(106)的装置(48，52)还包括：用于在节目指南屏幕(106)中提供节目表显示区域的装置，其中节目指南屏幕(106)包含某个单一频道的单一节目表(110)以及广告(112)，其中节目表显示区域是浏览显示和翻转显示其中之一；
用于在指定频道之视频上覆盖节目表显示区域的装置；
用于提供突出显示(108)的装置；以及
用于为用户提供将突出显示(108)从节目表(110)导航到广告(112)的能力的装置。
2.权利要求1定义的系统(30)，其中所述广告(112)包含文字。
3.权利要求1定义的系统(30)，其中所述广告(112)包含图形。
4.权利要求1定义的系统(30)，其中所述广告(112)包含视频。
