The article is dedicated to separatist tendencies in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country which is a part of the historical region of the Basque Country, divided between Spain and France. This Autonomous Community, likewise the Autonomous Community of Navarre, belongs to the territory and is subjected to jurisdiction of Spain which has been raising numerous conflicts over its status. The article presents contingencies of contemporary Basque separatism, including the ones related to the legislative framework provided by the Spanish Constitution which grant sovereignty solely to the Spanish nation, excluding any other subject from such a potentiality and social attitudes towards alternative forms of statehood. Attitudes in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country are polarized between claims for secession, preference for federalism and maintenance of the status quo rather than an unanimous and uncontested expression of being oppressed by the Spanish State.

The article is dedicated to contemporary separatist tendencies in Catalonia with a special focus on pragmatic rather than identity-related issues. In the recent years there has been a surge of demonstrations against the central government and a Catalan self-determination referendum has been planned, leading to a severe conflict over its constitutionality. Whilst the political atmosphere is frequently presented in the mass media as if Spain was falling apart, the picture is more nuanced. The article presents several factors which contribute to intensification of claims for succession as well as opinion poll results on attitudes among the Catalans towards alternative forms of state governance, including maintenance of status quo, increasing or decreasing the scope of autonomy, Catalan independence and centralism.

The paper is dedicated to a presentation of a fragment of the first phase of a comprehensive empirical study conducted in Białystok in the year 2015 (Biernacka head, Wądołowski, Wołyniec), with a focus on the young generation’s attitudes with reference to migration. Taking into account high unemployment rates in Poland and relatively meagre life chances comparing to many so-called old Europe countries, a life trajectory based on migration is recognized by many Poles as the only one that makes sense and is worth the effort. Thereupon, future orientation options to be selected by respondents in an original self-administered survey designed for the purpose of this project have been organized with a direct reference to migration. Those were investigated in particular contexts, with relation to study, job and remuneration prospects in their homeland and abroad. The project allows to envisage patterns of probable future behaviours of young generations in the country where migration in the...

The article is dedicated to traditional festivities called Moros y Cristianos, or in a literal translation: Moors and Christians, which are widespread in a number of autonomous communities in Spain, including Valencia, Andalusia, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha and many others. The name literally means Moors and Christians and is used with reference to festivities commemorating real or legendary battles between two civilizations during the Spanish Reconquista (or: reconquest) with Christians finally taking over the Iberian Peninsula. For a few centuries it has been serving as a modus operandi for depicting an eternal conflict between Christianity and Islam in the street culture, hence: reconstructing images of civilizational oddity of Muslims.

War on Memorials in Catalonia. What to Do with Commemoration of the Battle of the Ebro The article discusses the conflicts taking place in public life over interpretation of the significance of places of national memory. The author presents them on the example of the dispute that arose in Spain over a memorial in the Catalan city of Tortosa. It commemorates the Battle of the Ebro, the military operation of the largest scale and consequences during the Spanish Civil War. The opponents of the memorial consider it as a testimony to the victory of Francoism and an unsightly and disgraceful element in the urban tissue. They appeal for its liquidation, while those arguing for its preservation and reinterpretation of the symbolic meaning treat it as an architecturally valuable distinguishing feature of the city. The fate of the controversial memorial does not rest solely in the hands of local authorities, but it has become a subject of political disagreement, disputes among residents and n...

This article provides an analysis of the disparity between the Church’s official position and its pragmatic activities in regard to the Basque minority in Spain under General Franco’s regime. Linguistic distinctness has been a key factor enabling the Basque community to maintain its hermetic character and strong social ties in spite of systematic state-building measures based on the idea of a single Spanish nation. Contrary to a common belief, the Church not only worked for but also against the national idea. The author argues that on the one hand it provided moral support for Spanish centralism and notions of a single nation and thus legitimized political activities aimed at assimilating the minority, but on the other hand, at the grassroots level in the Land of the Basques, it contributed to preserving the Basque language (the basis for maintaining ethnic distinctness and continuity), contrary to ideals of national unification.

The objective of the article is to present the meaning of a historically constructed dichotomy between “us” and “them” in Spain, based upon a simplified vision of the relation between Christianity and Islam, thereupon relating it to social life. Regardless of the increasingly multicultural character of the Spanish society, its secularization processes—leading to the decrease of the importance of Christianity and the Roman-Catholic Church as the source of morality and a number of other factors, this dichotomy remains vivid in social life. In this context, a special focus should be made on the perception of the Muslim heritage in constructing identities of Spaniards. A particular goal is an attempt to its systematization with reference to the identity of respondents upon semi-structured interviews conducted in Spain in the years 2010-2016. Drawing upon this material, three working categories of attitudes towards the heritage of Islam can be made with reference to respondents’ identity. They may serve as a contribution to hypothesis forming in a wide-scale empirical research in Spain or other societies where a significant religion had been disowned and eroded from the national memory over the centuries.

The paper scrutinizes the particularities of the terms Gypsy and Romaní and selected differences between them in the context of the Spanish society. The first notion refers to the ethnicity which has been historically linked with the Iberian Peninsula since the first half of the fifteenth century and the term Romaní is used with reference to nomadic groups mainly from the Balkans. While the notion ‘Gypsy’ has been abandoned in Central and Eastern Europe as disparaging, its equivalent i.e. gitano is legitimate and acceptable in Spain. The article also draws upon some of qualitative research carried out by the author in Spain, i.e. participant observation and unstructured interviews conducted with the Gypsies with a focus on identity and language issues.

Poddaje on analizie kluczowe konflikty między: Szwedzką Socjaldemokratyczną Partią Robotniczą, związkami zawodowymi i organizacją pracodawców.

The article is dedicated to the media images of the Spanish Bourbon monarchy, especially the King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia, accompanied with an analysis of their role as (super) heroes or antiheroes of the nation. The author presents the problem of their standing in the public opinion in the face of participation of the royal family members in numerous political, sex and financial scandals, but also general crisis of the monarchy in Spain. Additional factors which make the King’s role of a superhero infeasible is a high level of contestation of the national idea in the society and augmenting secessionist tendencies, especially in Catalonia. In the atmosphere of probable disintegration of the Spanish state the monarch is unable to take substantial measures but remains obliged to make reference to them in his ceremonial public statements.

The paper is dedicated to immigration and transnational families in Spain. The author presents legislative aspects, discusses social phenomena and analyzes crucial INE data which hinge on the intersection of immigration and family issues. The data include: 1/the number of marriages which are referred to as matrimonios mixtos, i.e. the ones which are contracted between a Spaniard and the other spouse being a foreigner, 2/the number of marriages contracted in Spain between foreigners and 3/their share in the total number of nuptials. Legislative aspects relate to the formal conditions which need to be fulfilled by foreigners in order to enter into wedlock and the requirements concerning documentation on the part of a Spanish citizen and a foreigner. What is important, the Spanish law allows a marriage to be contracted between a Spanish citizen and a foreigner regardless of the status of the latter. That is to say, the future spouse may be in a so-called irregular situation which grants the right for undocumented immigrants to get married in Spain and eventually obtain a residence permit.

The article discusses Jewish quarters in contemporary Spain and Portugal. It is focused on institutionalised practices towards them and their remnants in the urban tissue. While in the Middle Ages they served as a method of religious segregation, nowadays they are used with the purpose of demonstration religious diversity. They are subject of research projects, meticulous reconstruction and reinterpretation. The forerunner of presenting Jewish quarters as a part of multicultural heritage in Spain is Red de Juderías de España – Caminos de Sefarad, which has its Portuguese counterpart, Rede de Judiarias de Portugal – Rotas de Sefarad. Their activity incorporates administering registers, organizing multimedia projects, conferences, exhibitions, educational projects and elaborating tourist products on Jewish quarters.

The article is dedicated to the Muslims in Poland, with a special focus on their institutional representation. This religious minority encircles a diverse populace in terms of the path in Islam they adhere to, ethnicity, country of origin, but also the legal status they have in Poland. It includes Muslim Tatars, former students from Arab countries who have been living in this country for decades, as well as transient groups war refugees from Chechnya, Afghanistan or the Balkans, esp. Bosnia and Herzegovina. The author argues that institutionalized entities of religious character which associate Muslims in the country, organize their presence in religious terms and represent them, reflect major divisions within the Muslim populace in the country. A key factor is the duration of their settlement – it is concomitant to, if not more important than, tensions between the Sunnis and Shiites.

The article is dedicated to traditional festivities called Moros y Cristianos, or in a literal translation: Moors and Christians, which are widespread in a number of autonomous communities in Spain, including Valencia, Andalusia, Murcia, Castille la Mancha and many others. The name literally means Moors and Christians and is used with reference to festivities commemorating real or legendary battles between two civilizations during the Spanish Reconquista (or: reconquest) with Christians finally taking over the Iberian Peninsula. For a few centuries it has been serving as a modus operandi for depicting an eternal conlict between Christianity and Islam in the street culture, hence: reconstructing images of civilizational oddity of Muslims.

Poddaje on analizie kluczowe konflikty między: Szwedzką Socjaldemokratyczną Partią Robotniczą, związkami zawodowymi i organizacją pracodawców.
