Baskowie

The article is dedicated to euskera, i.e.  the native language spoken by the Basques. The major focus is not on its linguistic but social aspects in the context of the Basque Autonomous Community which forms a part of the Spanish state. It is an endemic language which does not belong to the Romance languages and not even to Indo-European language group. As opposed to other minority languages in Spain, it is completely incomprehensible in Spain to the ones who have not studied it. Due to fallibility of other indicators of identity, such as Basque names or being attached to the fatherland, the ability to communicate effectively in euskera constitutes a fundamental symbolic marker of identity and provides the way to prove it to the Basque compatriots. In this language tradition there is a conflation of meaning concerning the term euskaldunak, referred both to Basques and individuals who display the ability to speak euskera. The article shows that this language is not only cardinal when it comes to Basqueness, preserving it in the community and distinguishing us from them, but even equating linguistic capacity with belonging to the Basque ethnic group.

W artykule podejmuję problem współczesnego nacjonalizmu i miejsca, jakie zajmuje on pośród funkcjonujących dzisiaj ruchów społecznych. Podkreślając aktualność problematy-ki nacjonalistycznej i obecność nacjonalizmu we współczesnym świecie, zwracam uwagę na pewną ciągłość tradycji nacjonalistycznej i równoczesną odmienność dzisiejszego " nowego " nacjonalizmu od klasycznego (" starego ") nacjonalizmu XIX-wiecznego. Przedmiotem analizy był tu nacjonalizm baskijski, który nie tylko pozostaje jedną z podstawowych sił obecnych w baskijskiej przestrzeni społecznej, lecz jest również dobrą egzemplifikacją wspomnianej, szczególnej specyfiki nacjonalizmu, tj. łączenia przez niego przeszłości z teraźniejszością. Z jednej strony nacjonalizm ten jest " nowy " , bo nowe są warunki społeczne, ekonomiczne i polityczne, w których funkcjonuje (co szczególnie widoczne w odniesieniu do celów nacjonalizmu), z drugiej zaś pozostaje wierny swojej tradycji – niezmienne pozostają wartości nacjonalistyczne; zarówno "stary" jak i "nowy" nacjonalizm opiera się na przekonaniu, że Baskowie są narodem i powinni mieć prawo do zachowania swojej kultury narodowej i języka oraz samodecydowania o sobie w sferze politycznej.

The article addresses the problem of modern nationalism and its place among today’s social movements. Emphasizing the relevance of nationalist creed and the
presence of nationalism in the modern world, I focus on its special characteristic, i.e. a certain continuity of nationalist tradition and simultaneous dissimilarity between the two types, or better yet: two versions of nationalism: the contemporary (“new”) one, and the classic (“old”) nineteenth-century one. In the part that is devoted to the
analysis of empirical data, I analyze an example of modern Basque nationalism,
which not only remains one of the principle forces that shape present Basque social space, but which is also a very good exemplification of this particular nature of
nationalism, i.e. the link that nationalism draws between the past and the present. On one hand, nationalism is “new”, because the new are social, economic and political conditions in which nationalism operates (it is particularly visible in
relation to the goals of nationalism), on the other hand it remains true to its origins –
the core nationalist values stay unchanged in a sense that both “old” and “new” nationalisms are based on the belief that the Basques are in fact a nation and as such they should have the right to preserve their national culture and language, and have the power to determine their own political destiny.
