About this audiobook

A 2025 Audie Award winner for Best Fiction Narrator!

"Kristin Hannah’s potent storytelling skills are brilliantly served by narrator Julia Whelan, whose limber, low-pitched voice moves nimbly from person to person, capturing personality and mood, her empathy palpable." —The Washington Post

"A moving, skillfully narrated story about women’s friendships and the ongoing physical and mental consequences of war.”—Library Journal

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

Although this book was a little racer than what I normally read I am so glad I stuck it out to the end. Thank you for putting this historical eye on an era of my past. Well done.

There were times I became frustrated with the main character; HOWEVER, I believe it was part of the roller coaster of emotions I felt. There were times of happiness, sadness, and even I knew it! I can’t wait to listen/read another book by this author!

By far one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of listening to this year. Its everything i thought couldn’t be wrapped into a single book. Its a story that weaves together love, loss, strength and courage seamlessly, leaving an imprint on your heart long after the final sentence.

Captivating, informative, infuriating, inspiring. A story that makes me want to know more about the stories from Vietnam. Especially, the women. Thank you for another amazing story, empowering women and revealing their significantly extraordinary stories through the power of narrative.

This book gutted me! Holy cow it was so good! Well written and Frankie’s journey was sad and inspiring. To have gone what she went through. The trauma and the fact that no one believed her. Expected her to just get over it! If I heard that one more time!

For me, this book dragged on. I already knew a lot about Vietnam war nurses and their struggles back home. I can’t believe half the book was just her after she came back. It was also soooo cheesy that I just kept rolling my eyes, like seriously? Is this a soap opera?

Where do I begin with this review... Maybe I should take a few days beforehand, but I just need to get it out.

This is the first novel I've ever read by Kristin Hannah and I wasn't sure what to expect as I get disappointed by hyper up books and authors almost every time. Maybe I just don't have the same taste as those individuals the books are usually geared towards. I almost didn't read this one for that reason, but I'm so very glad I gave it a chance.

This story will definitely stick with me for a while. It was beautifully written and so vividly brought me into the world at the time of the Vietnam war. While this story is fiction, it is based on what Vietnam Vets suffered through upon their return and should be read with open eyes in order to fully grasp it all.

I rented this book from our public library, but I would love to purchase it so I can re read and annotate it in order to dive even deeper into this story.

Just read it for the second time. I live through that. Here in the states and knew a lot, but learned much that I didn’t. It expanded my understanding greatly. And it’s a great novel as well. People have complained about everything happening to one person being unrealistic. I think the author was trying to get all these scenarios told in a readable way, and she succeeded.

This was a good informative read about the Vietnam War. I’m a baby boomer born in 1963 but too young to really understand what was going on. Thank you for this book and especially the emphasis on the woman and their contributions! It was a hard read at times but felt realistic as to how vets of that war experienced its wrath. Great story and I smiled about the name of the ranch! The name is coincidental about how I feel about a visit to that US state and had a photo blown up taken there and engraved with those words!

In the crazy world we live in today, it’s nice to recall the simpler days. When the war was ended, I remember looking at the newspaper and thinking this war was going on for my entire life, how is a girl like me surviving.

Never met a woman that went to Vietnam, it saddens me so that there is few generations that acknowledge the bravery to the women that served regardless of the conditions.

Thank you for your service, thank you for sharing this struggle.

Absolute best book I read in 2024. Perhaps my favorite KH book. Definitely gave me a glance of the world my father-in-law and many of my friends fathers live through in Vietnam.
