About this audiobook
The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era.
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship: poised English beauty Fliss, whose facade of perfect wife and mother covers gaping inner wounds; policeman’s daughter Nora, who finds herself entangled with a shadowy gangster; frustrated baseball star Beatrice, whose career has come to an end along with the women’s baseball league of WWII; and poisonous, gung-ho Arlene, who has thrown herself into McCarthy’s Red Scare.
Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. When a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club women must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?
Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.
Includes a bonus conversation with Kate Quinn, Saskia Maarleveld, and Tessa Woodward, editor of The Briar Club.

Historical fiction with some twists and turns but a great story of women and how they make decisions and become more fully themselves. No matter society and rules. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A vivid book, THE BRIAR CLUB is set in D.C. in the 1950s McCarthy-era. A motley, steely group of women in Briarwood Boarding House (which is itself a character) face misogyny, racism, antisemitism, spies, McCathy himself, and their own wounds. Audiobook is riveting too. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

4.5 ⭐ rounded up.
I have read several books by Kate Quinn and I liked some of them very much. This one did not disappoint!
It starts with a murder in Thanksgiving 1954 and we don't know who the victim nor the perpetrator are. Then it goes back four years and starts telling the story from the moment that Grace March moved into Briar House.
It is a character based story (and there are several people living there), but I think it was well developed, I never lost interest even when it changed characters.
I found the period interesting since I hadn't read any novels set in those times with that political context. And I found the house POV as narrator really original and almost like a character itself. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Beautifully written, Kate Quinn takes the reader on a journey through the 1950's. I could really picture the sights and sounds she described. Thoroughly enjoyed it. A great read or listen. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Quinn does it again!
There are so many characters to fall in love with in this book. Each one is better than the last, I don't know if I can pick a favorite.
Grace, the main character's story when fully 6 rather dull, in my opinion.
So as not to add any spoilers, I'll just say, I wish she had done the things she said she didn't do for her job before she left it. It would have made her more interesting in the end. But she was an exceptional friend, the kind and woman needs. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

The time period, the characters, the story…I wish Kate Quinn would release a new book every week. She’s my favorite author, and this one does not disappoint. Such a different “tone” to this book, but it’s rich and colorful, while also confronting some dark times in our nation’s history. For the first few chapters I likened Grace to an “adult” Mary Poppins. Truly a great book, and the narration was phenomenal. Bravo! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I think at this point I will read anything Kate Quinn writes. The character building she does in this particular book is phenomenal. Each character story builds upon the other. The story itself is a mash up of so many things that were happening during the 50's, told by the perspective of each woman living at the Briar House. So, so good.1 person found this helpful
