“Utterly gripping. . . a transformative and immersive story so powerful and captivating that I could not put it down. . . . Truly one of the best books I’ve read.”—Liv Constantine, bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish
“Lisa Barr's new historical fiction, The Goddess of Warsaw, gifts the reader with jaw-dropping moments worthy of a Tarantino film, a story that could not be more timely, and a heroine whose ferocity and valor knows no bounds.”—Natalie Jenner, author of the instant international bestseller The Jane Austen Society
The Goddess of Warsaw is an enthralling tale of a legendary Hollywood screen goddess with a dark secret about her life in the Warsaw Ghetto. When the famous actress is threatened by someone from her past, she must put her skills into play to protect herself, her illustrious career, and those she loves, then and now.
Los Angeles, 2005. Sienna Hayes, Hollywood’s latest It Girl, has ambitions to work behind the camera. When she meets Lena Browning, the enormously mysterious and famous Golden Age movie star, Sienna sees her big break. She wants to direct a picture about Lena’s life—but the legendary actor’s murky past turns out to be even darker than Sienna dreamed. Before she was a Living Legend, Lena Browning was Bina Blonski, a Polish Jew whose life and family were destroyed by the Nazis.
Warsaw, 1943. A member of the city’s Jewish elite, Bina Blonski and her husband, Jakub, are imprisoned in the ghastly, cramped ghetto along with the rest of Warsaw’s surviving Jews. Determined to fight back against the brutal Nazis, the beautiful, blonde Aryan-looking Bina becomes a spy, gaining information and stealing weapons outside the ghetto to protect her fellow Jews. But her dangerous circumstances grow complicated when she falls in love with Aleksander, an ally in resistance—and Jakub’s brother. While Lena accomplishes amazing feats of bravery, she sacrifices much in the process.
Over a decade after escaping the horrors of the ghetto, Bina, now known as Lena, rises to fame in Hollywood. Yet she cannot help but be reminded of her old life and hungers for revenge against the Nazis who escaped justice after the war. Her power and fame as a movie star offer Lena the chance to right the past’s wrongs . . . and perhaps even find the happy ending she never had.
A gripping page-turner of one of history’s most heroic uprisings and an actress whose personal war never ends, The Goddess Of Warsaw is filled with secrets, lies, twists and turns, and a burning pursuit of justice no matter the cost.

While this book is fiction, it is telling of the influence of anti-Semitism that saturates America and the world. The story is a horrific yet inspiring tale of one woman's escape from the Warsaw ghetto and a lifetime spent as a vigilante. The story is captivating, well- researched, and often heart-wrenching. It is truly one of the very best of its kind. Thank you for writing this. It has opened my eyes, and offers a strong reminder that in today's political inferno, we must be watchful and learn from the past. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Wow!! Heckuva great read!! It's 3am, and it just ended. I couldn't stop listening until it was finished. Total immersion in the story and deeply involved in the characters' roles through this harrowing period. I almost wish I'd listened to the epilogie first; several times I had wondered how close some situations adhered to actual events. Now, I'm going to let this sit for a short while and then listen again. Just... wow! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Wow. I would give this novel ten stars if I could. I’m not a fan of WWII fiction but the plot looked particularly interesting so I gave it a shot. Bina Blonksky is a true bada*s who fights hard and loses everything, only to rise from the ashes like a phoenix. The plot left me guessing until nearly the end but the final scene was a worthy ending to Bina’s story. I can’t recommend this novel enough! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I enjoy World War II genre stories. This book, however, seems little more than a vehicle for soft porn with World War II as the backdrop.
You know, uh, stuff like terror, concentration, camps, Nazis who did despicable things, abuse, starvation, and so much atrocity and horror for Jews and others in Europe.
But, hey, during all this (haphazardly covered) tragedy Bina, our protagonist, had relentless hots and fantasies for her brother-in-law, even after spending nights/days working as a prostitute outside the ghetto. She did this to spy on enemy secrets and barter for food to smuggle into the ghetto. She, though a Jew, could come and go from the ghetto easily as she looked like an Aryan.
Yes, I think her character’s desire to help feed the starving while also attempting to gather secret Nazi intel is admirable. And many people died doing those very things.
Call me crazy but it still seems highly implausible to me that in the midst of all that terror, subterfuge, starvation, fear, lack, deprivation, and everything they went through that Bina’s sexual fantasies for Alexander would be so time consuming. Especially after having already spent so much time pleasuring the enemy.
Oh—and many emotions seemed to be lacking from the characters in places where they would naturally display them. I found seething jealously, irritation during discussions of problem solving and burning passion to be the bulk of character interaction.
Truly, I wanted to enjoy this book. I thought the premise sounded intriguing. And maybe as the book progressed it got much better. All I know is I couldn’t go any further with it.
Would really like to know how others saw things I didn’t see. Sometimes we get it wrong and sometimes we get it right.1 person found this helpful
