About this audiobook

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In this “magical trip worth taking” (Associated Press), the New York Times bestselling author of In Five Years returns with a powerful novel about the transformational love between mothers and daughters set on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast.

When Katy’s mother dies, she is left reeling. Carol wasn’t just Katy’s mom, but her best friend and first phone call. She had all the answers and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone. To make matters worse, their planned mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: to Positano, the magical town where Carol spent the summer right before she met Katy’s father. Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her, and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone.

But as soon as she steps foot on the Amalfi Coast, Katy begins to feel her mother’s spirit. Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliffsides, delightful residents, and, of course, delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life.

And then Carol appears—in the flesh, healthy, sun-tanned, and thirty years old. Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or how—all she can focus on is that she has somehow, impossibly, gotten her mother back. Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her. She is not exactly who Katy imagined she might be, however, and soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who does not yet have a clue.

“Rebecca Serle is known for her powerful stories that tug at the heartstrings—and her latest is just as unforgettable” (Woman’s World) as it effortlessly shows us how to move on after loss, and how the people we love never truly leave us.

Editor's Note

Heartfelt…

The author of “In Five Years” is back with another time-bending adventure — and this time it takes place in dreamy Positano, Italy. When Katy Silver takes a solo trip to Italy while grieving the death of her mother, she inexplicably encounters her mother’s 30-year-old self (as well as a handsome hero, of course). Searle delivers another heartfelt story about deep love and the meaning of life.

I didn’t like some of the decisions the main character made. I can’t really say much without giving it away. I know I’m in the minority but I just was so disappointed.

    Great narration by Lauren Graham
This is a story anyone can relate to of a bond formed by a mother and daughter, but it could be anyone important to you. How it shapes you and makes you who you are. About how you appreciate it even more if it's taken from you. Live in the moment and cherish it. We have all wanted to go back in time and change something and this book gives you just that.

Grief is complicated, particularly when you are an only child in a strong Mother-Daughter bond. A beautiful story that I look forward to reading again someday.

Love Lauren Graham which is why I chose the audiobook over reading the book. She did a good job narrating. However, I hated the story. The main character just came off whiny and annoying, I just wanted to tell her to grow up. I kept reading to see if it would get better but it just wasn't for me.

I thought it was a good book, but did not care for the narrator’s flat voice. I could have enjoyed it much more with a better narrator.

This book made me crave travelling so much! Costa Amalfitana is one of the destinations on my bucket list. The care, the way the author treated grief, choices and agency were so thoughtful and emotional. I couldn't help but think of my own mother and the choices we both made along the way. She too is my best friend.

The writing was much better than the bland reading. No inflection just straight monotone reading.

I liked the descriptions of the Italian scenery and the food more than anything… I really struggled to like the main character. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get passed her (IMO) unhealthy level of co-dependency with her mother, her “complaints” about her lovely husband, her hypocritical view of infidelity, and her (okay, redeemable) selfish qualities. But the author did one heck of a job putting the reader smack dab in the middle of Italy and all its wonder.

For me, this was a book with a really cool concept and great potential that didn't really land. Katy was a really unlikable character, and I went from relating with her over the loss of her mother, to hating her and how hollow and awful she was as a person. This poignant mother-daughter story that I thought I was in for, really turned out to be a dynamic that was codependent and pretty toxic. Don't even get me started on the way that she treated her husband. And with all of that, it was also just boring, not a lot happens and you don't really get to see things play out on page the way that you think you will. So disappointing, I won't be reading another one of her books.

Side note, I love Lauren Graham as an actress, but a narrator she is not...

A good story on reflection and seeing things through a different a different perspective. The story takes us through grief and loss and figuring out who one is with a missing part of themselves. There were fun little twists along the way and something's I may not agree with but I enjoyed the story made me want to go to Italy!
