SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,807, dated March 14:, 1882.

Be it known that I, Hnxav Hours. of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel grouping and configuration of figures hereinafter more fully described.

The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.

The ground a is filled with small forms, resembling broken twigs and short lines and dots, and is traversed by various flower groups, as follows:

A is a cluster having a central starshaped flower on a background of leaves, a fern above and one below, several small branching twigs, and a small tlower-and-leaf cluster proj eeting on the right.

B is a larger group of circular and starshaped flowers on a ground of leaves, with projecting ferns and leaves and twigs or lichen-like forms traversing loosely the surrounding field.

C is a tlower-and-leaf group, with a projecting flower-andleaf spray above, and a flower, leaf, and bud spray to the right, and branching twigs or lichen-like forms springing out on every side.

D is a group consisting of the central leaf cluster, (I, with projecting twig forms and a leaf spray above, below and on the left the scattered leaf-and-flower cluster Z), bearing buds and branching twigs, and on the right below the scattered cluster 0 of flowers, leaves, and twigs.

E is a group similar to B.

F (shown in part on each side of the photograph) is a small cluster of flowers and leaves. with projecting twigs or lichen like forms and a leaf-sprig on the right.

G (shown in part at each end of the photograph) is a tlower aml-leaf-clnster, with projecting sprays and twigs, and just below it a smaller cluster, H.

K (shown in part in the four corners of the photograph) is a leaf-and-flower cluster, with fern andleaf sprays above and projecting'twigs or lichen-like forms.

The design as a whole presents an open appearanee.

2. The design for carpets, consisting of the group B, substantially as shown.

3. The design for carpets, consisting group C, substantially as shown.
