PATENT OFFICE.
DESlGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,865. dated April 11, 1852.
Application tiled February 112, 1:72.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. JULIUS PEGIGL, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics: and it consists in the novel grouping and config uration of figures hereinafter more fully de scribed.
The accompanying photograph illustrates a lace view of a carpet having my new design.
A is a blank field traversed irregularly by small lichen or coral like figures. with blossoms b. and by stray leaf forms 0 between the large tlower groups B, C, D, and E. and by the border-sprays of those groups. B, C. D, and I) each rest on and partially conceal a plain background, a, distinct from the blank field A, and consist of irregular groups of fiower figures and leaves variously massed, as shown, and spreading out irregularly over the ground a and the adjacent parts of the blank field A.
B is group composed of the rose-and-leaf cluster F, (a full-blown rose in a mass of leaves, and above it a moss-rose bud,) surmounted by fern-leaves d, to the left a cluster of five-leafed star-shaped flowers, e, below a cluster of circular star-shaped flowers and jutting-leaves, h, also a cluster above and to the right, Z. B terminates on the right in a group of geranium leaves and blossoms,f, and a rose and moss-rose bud in a leaf cluster, g.
C is a group composed of the roseanddeat' cluster G, (two open roses in a leaf cluster, with two pendent moss-rose buds directly below,) surrounded by the fiower-and-leaf clusters k 21 m, and the leaf clusters 11 0 t? have fiaglike leaves.
D (shown in part on one side and in parton the other side of the photograph) consists of a group of geranium leaves and blossoms, 1), below them a group of small circular starshaped flowers and leaves, (1, on their right, and jutting out over a, a leaf group, r, and on their T rm of parent .I years.
left a inoss-roselnnl above and below a elus ter, 1. ot'sinall star-shaped tlowers and spreading open leaves.
E tshown in part on one side and in part on the other side of the photograph consists of the rose-and-leal' cluster 1/. tan open rose. with leaves, and two moss-rose buds below it. i above it the spreading leal' cluster 1. to the right the group of small star-shaped llowers and leaves it, to the left the small stanshaped fiowerand leal'cluster 1 and below that a si in i lar cluster,
The effect of the whole design is as if the background (1. which remains compact and unbroken under the mass of the large llower groups B, C. D, and E, is torn and broken up in the spaces between such groups. and the blank field A. thereby disclosed, is filled with the irregular fragments I) c, heretofore described as lichen or coral like terms.
I claim 1. The design for carpets, consisting of the group B, including the figures F ii c I: 7 f substantially as shown.
2. The design for carpets, consisting of the group 0, including the figures G l; i m )1 41. substantially as shown.
3. The design for carpets, consisting of the group D, including p q r a f, substantially as shown.
4:. The design for carpets, consisting of the group E, including u r 10 y substantially as shown.
5. The design for carpets, consisting of the figures b c, the group B, including the figures F (16h Z fg, the group including the tiggures G I: i m )1 o. the group D, including the figures p q r s f, the group E, including the figures u v w 11:, and the ground (I and field A, substantially as shown.
6. The design for carpets, consisting of the figures b c, the ground a, and field A. substantially as shown.
