J. PEGEL CARPET,
Patezled Apr. ll, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JULIUS PEGEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE HARTFORD CARPET COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,877, dated April 11, 1882.
Application filed February S23, 1882. Term of patent 3 years.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULIUs PEGEL, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and original De- 5 sign for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics 5 and it consists in the novel grouping and coniiguration of figures, hereinafter more fully described.
The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.
The blank field a a a underlies the greater part of the design, being broken only by the lank fields b c-the former somewhat arched and the latter somewhat triangular in shapeand the irregular eld fi. Over ,the fields b and c, at theirupper edges, project for a short distance portions of the field or ground c in 2o the form of lichen or coral-like sprays jutting from a., and the lower portions of both b and c are traversed by bouquets of flowers and leaves springing from those parts of 'a immediately below said b and c. The field 'i shown partly on each side of the photograph) is mostly ornamented by small rectangular fretwork, has an out-line on the right resembling ascending steps, and is traversed in parts by flower groups.
A is the bouquet, portions of' which traverse the lower part of and project up into the ground b, being set out prominently thereby. A consists above of two small star-shaped flower clusters, o and d, springing from a bunch of' flag-leaves, e; centrally the large cluster B, massed roses and small flowers, and
geranium and other leaves; 011 the left the small star-shaped fiower bunch f, and on the right two similar bunches, g and h, the various 4o parts of A overlying and partially concealing adjacent figures.
C is a border, bounding b on the right, consisting of a series ofheart-shaped figures, e11- circling line-work, and intervening darts.
D is a large bouquet traversing a. directly over '2), and consisting of two large five-petaled owers centrally, with small star-shaped l ilowers and blossoms above vand to the left,
all supported on and surrounded by a mass of' leaves.
E, to the left of D, is a cluster of small starshaped iiowers. y F, to the right of D,- and shown in part on ,each side of the photograph, part of it having the form of an inverted V, is a border with a series of pendent darts above and a Grecian ornament below, and in part forms the upper boundary of the field c, being traversed by the lichen or coral-like forms that project into the viield c below.
From E to F springs the arch G, consisting of a series of' separate sprays of' lichen or coral-like forms bearing small blossoms. This arch G leaves portions of the field a blank between it and the group D. Above G, and arching with it, is the figure k, ornamented by small rectangular fret-work traversed by the sprays of G, and its upper outline presenting the appearance of' two series of ascending steps approaching above, and, with 7o their common step, the keystone of' the arch, supporting the wide border H, from which the fiower group A springs. H consists of a band below, ornameuted by small cross-shaped figures, a narrow middle .band with triangular ornaments, and a broad band above, mostly concealed by A, ornamented by squares placed diagonally, with square centers.
Under the left foot of' the arch G k is the horizontal border I, consisting of a series of 8o small heart-shaped leaf forms with small crosses between, and below l the horizontal and vertical border m, consisting of a series of squares with star-like centers below and a scries of small triangles above. m forms the upper and right-hand boundary ofthe irregular figure a, (shown in part on each side ofthe photograph,) forming part ofthe blank field a.
a is traversed on the right by parts of' the group. j', and centrally by the leaf group K, 9o having projecting flower-clusters above. l
L is a bouquet, which traverses the lower portions ofthe field c, and projects down into the field 1' and over adjacent figures, and' con-` sists of tWo L rge roses supported on a mass of 4.
