UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HORAN, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE HART- FORD CARPET COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,823, dated March 21, 1882.
' Application filed Februaryll, 1882. Term of patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY HORAN, of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a. new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel grouping and configuration of figures hereinafter more full described.
The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.
A is a ground field ornamented by various small geometric figures in irregularly-shinied groups, as shown. On this field, and traversing portions of it, are the flo wer-and-leafgroups B, C, D, E, and F.
B is the largest group, and has as its center the figure a, which consists of a leaf mass with two t'erlrleaves below and one on each side. On the left is a projecting twig, as also on the right, and below and to the left is a bunch of narrow leaves. Projecting from a above and to the left is the flower-and-leat'group 1). Directly above a, and springing from it, is the group 0, consisting ofa large central flower and a smaller flower on each side and a leaf cluster, and above ferns which spread upward and outward. Above and to the right of a, and arranged on a forking branch projecting from a, is the leaf-and'flower group (I. The upper fork terminates in c-a scattered group of circular flowers, leaves, and twigs-and the lower fork in a similar but more scattered group,f, shown in part on each side of the photograph.
C is a group directly below the group B. It has at its center the leaf cluster g, which has a twig and a bud sprig below, and to the left a twig bearing a leaf. To the right of g, and
connected with it, is the circular flower group It, with two ferns below and a forking twig between them and a twig bearing a leaf above. Projecting from the left of g, and arching over it toward the right, is the scattered twigand leaf group 70.
D is a flower-and-leaf group, shown in part on one side and in part on the other side of the photograph. It has as its center the leaf cluster 1, which includes a fern projecting to the left. Below Z is the figure m, projecting from l-a twig bearing circular flowers and buds. Above L, and projecting from it, is na branching twig with flowers.
E is a flower-andleaf group, also shown in part on each side of the photograph. It has as its center the leaf group 0, having a small twig and flower projecting to the right, and to the left a small leaf spray below 0, and projecting from it toward the right is the cluster pa branch bearing small leaves and circular 6o flowers. Above 0, and projectingfrom it, is the flower-and-leaf cluster (1.
F, shown in part at each end of the photograph, is a small leatcluster having projecting twigs and sprays. 6
These various groups are scattered loosely over the ground A, and the design as a whole presents an open appearance between and around the larger clusters, causing them to stand out prominently.-
1 claim- I. The design for carpets, consisting ground A, substantially as shown.
2. The design for carpets, consisting of the group B, (including a Z) c (10],) substantially as shown.
3. The design for carpets, consisting of the group C, (including 1 h 7a,) substantially as shown.
at. The design for carpets, consisting of the groups B, (including a b c d c C, (including g h 7r,) D, (including lm a,) E, (including op q,) and F, substantially as shown.
5. The design for carpets, consisting, of the groups B, (including a b c (1 cf,) C, (including g h lr,) D, (including 1 m n,) E, (including 0p q.) and F, and the ground A, substantially as shown.
