UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrce.
WINTIIROP L. JACOBS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSlGNOR TO THE HARTFORD CARPET COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,810, dated March 14, 1882,
Application filed February 11, 1882. Term of patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, WINTHROP L. JACOBS, of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useto] Design for Carpets, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel grouping and configuration of figures hereinafter more full y described.
The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.
A is a group consisting of the four-leaved flower a, with projecting bud, the flower and leaf figures b and c, and the angular connecting-stems with projecting blossoms.
The group B is shown in part on one side and in part on the other side of the design. It consists of the rectangular flower figure d, the flow- 2o er and leaf figure c, and the flower flguref, all connected by angular stems hearing at their junction a circular flower.
C is a group consisting of a star-like figure, from which project three augularbroken stems 2 hearing two of them a leaf-like flower figure,
and the third a circular flower.
The group D consists of the figuresg h. k and the connecting broken angular branch bearing circular flowers and bud-like figures atits an 0 gles and in projecting branches. 9 is a figure having a circular flower atits base, above four laterally-projecting leaves with tendrils, and at the apex atriple-pointed flower with tendrils. It has the appearance of a flower with a double 5 calix and a pointed bulb above with tendrils. k resembles a flower with a fan-like center, three leaves on each side, and a pointed bud-like apex.
The groupEconsists ofthe figures l and m and an angular stem on which they are set, which also bears a circular and a conical flower and bud. l is similar to g of group D. m is arectangular flower-figure with a circular flower in the center and projecting tendrils.
The group F consists of a circular star-like 5 flower with a projecting tendril and two short stems, bearing the one a five-leaved figure and the other a small circular flower.
The group G consists ofthe four-petaled flower n,from which spring three right-lined angular 0 branches bearingbuds and tendrils and the figures o and p. 0 is similar to g of group D. p is somewhat similar to 7c of group D.
Thegroup H consistsot' an open flower figure with tendrils, and having a branch projecting from it bearing on one fork a circular and on the other a conical flower figure.
The group K consists of a star-shaped figure and a connected broken angular stem bearing at difl'erent parts of its length a three-leaved and a five-leaved figure and several small cir- 6o cular and conical flower figures.
The group L consists of a central circular flower figure, above ita five-leaved and below ittwo three-leaved figures, and arranged around several smaller flower figures and the connecting angular stem and its branches.
The group M consists of the figures q r, a connecting angular stem audits branches and tendrils, and connected smaller flowers. q is a full blown flower with a circular center. r is a conical flower figure somewhat similar to b of group A.
The group N consists of a circular and a spreading flower figure and three smaller flower figures, two cross-like and one conical, all arranged on a short angular stem. The group is shown in part on one side and in part on the other side of the design.
The group 0 consists of the figures S ta 1;, two small circular flowers, and the angular 8o connecting-stems and projectingtendrils. Itis shown in part on each side of the design. sis a large circular serrated flower figure. t is a conical five-leaved figure with a circular flower atits base and projectingtendrils. u is a conical scven-leaved figure with a circular flower at its base and projecting tendrils. o is similar to the star-shaped central figure of group C.
The group P consists of the figures w, or, and y, and the connecting angularstem and branch- 9 es, and its projecting tendrils and smaller leaf and flower figures. w is a rectangular figure with a circular center. a: is somewhat similar to k. y is a bulb-shaped figure and occurs twice in this group.
These groupstraverseafield,z,ornamentedby small circular figures with rectangular star-centers, and having various minor groups filling in the spaces between thelarger groups enumerated, as shown in the photograph. r00
The design derives much ofits peculiar char- 2. The design for carpets, consisting of the acter, as a whole, from the angular character groups A, (including a b 0,)15, (including (10],)
of the short right-lined stems connecting di['- 0, D, (including 9 h k,) E, (including lm,) F, Cr, 15
ferent parts of the same group. (consisting of n 01),) II,K,L, M, (including 1 r,)
5 I claim N, 0, (including 816 tv,) and 1, (including 10 1. The design for carpets, consisting, of the 1' g with connecting angular stems, und the groups A,(iucluding a D0,) B, (including dict/i) field z, substantially as shown.
