DESIGN FOR A CARPET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,830, dated March 21, 1882. Application filed February 11, 1882. Tenn of patent 31; years.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WINTHROP L. JACOBS,

of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the f0!- lowing is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics"; and it consists in the novel grouping and configura- 13 tion of figureshereinafterxhoret'allydescribed.

The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.

A consists centrally of a horizontal rectangular figure, a portion of a star-shaped flower 15 above, and an irregular leaf formation below. On a stem depending from A is the flower B, having pointed petals and spreading corolla, from which projects a similar serrated flower, P. On the same stem is the group C, a small fan-like flower at the-fork of two leaf-sprays. Lower on the same stem is 1), (shown at top of photograph,) aheart-shaped flower with spreading petals and projecting had from a. A is set on a stem projecting from E, a bulb-shaped flower, which is carried on astem forking from a main stem which bears in succession the serrated flowers, with pointed petals and spreading corollas, F G H K L M, the star-shaped flower N, and the open bulb-like flower O, with 0 spreading petals and a blossom-and-leaf spray above. Between these larger flowers on this storm are various small leaf and, blossom forms and small star-like flowers, filling the ground of the design almost completely.-

Q is an open bnlb'like flower with spreading serrated petals, from which hangs a leaf-andblossom sprig. Above Q and on the same stem is a similar bulb-like flower, It, with a blossom-aud-leaf stein springing upward from it. Between Q and R and on the same stein are 0 various small star-shaped flower forms b c (I, and scattered leaf-groups e.

The whole design presents the appearance of being closely worked together, so that no blank fields are left, only so much of the ground 5 appearing between the various forms thateonstitute the design to enable the end of onefigare to be distinguished from the beginning of the next adjacent figure.

The prominent characteristics of the figures of this design are the scrrated'flowers and the small-lobed leaves.
