Paris, 1916. Sophie Lefèvre must keep her family safe while her adored husband, Édouard, fights at the front. When their town falls to the Germans in the midst of World War I, Sophie is forced to serve them every evening at her hotel. From the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie’s portrait—painted by her artist husband—a dangerous obsession is born, one that will lead Sophie to make a dark and terrible decision. Almost a century later, Sophie’s portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a wedding gift from her young husband before his sudden death. After a chance encounter reveals the portrait’s true worth, a battle begins over its troubled history and Liv’s world is turned upside all over again.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 30, 2022 Ancient history is beautiful and very moving; the one narrated in a more current era becomes a bit tedious and boring as the book progresses, but the ending is not to be missed; it is very emotional. (Translated from Spanish)

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 12, 2021 It's a sweetly sad story.
A man who has lost the ability to do and be almost everything he loved to do, and a young woman who is trying to fit in or not.
The protagonists will experience beautiful and painful moments alike.
It raises complex themes. How we dream of living, how we live, and how we decide to die.
 I laughed and cried.
I recommend it. (Translated from Spanish)

Once again, a book by this author abducts me from start to finish and manages to make me fall in love; I love how she writes, it makes reading so enjoyable, so easy that I find myself not wanting the book to ever end. I loved it!!!!
I loved and suffered like crazy with the stories of Sophie and Liv, reaching the end I was almost desperate for both, but luckily and in an unexpected way, everything is resolved and I could read and breathe at the same time, haha, I’m exaggerated, but I really was getting upset.
I started it with zero expectations and not knowing anything else other than that the author is JOJO MOYES, and the truth is that I finished it more than satisfied!! Beautiful book! (Translated from Spanish)

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 18, 2021 A completely touching story, I liked the stories of both protagonists, very strong and determined to live their lives despite all the obstacles they face. The story is very well woven, and the moment the past intertwines with the present was very emotional, a little predictable but very heartfelt. I didn’t like the male characters much; I found them a bit flat, as we didn’t get to know them completely and their motivations weren't explained. It has been one of those little romantic stories that I loved from start to finish. Highly recommended if you, like me, are not a fan of romantic literature but occasionally feel like finding something enjoyable within this genre. (Translated from Spanish)

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Jan 26, 2021 I liked it a lot, to be honest. It’s one of those stories whose ending is happy but in a melancholic way. It made me feel and suffer. Moreover, seeing characters in such similar situations yet in a different way was beautiful. (Translated from Spanish)

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dec 23, 2020 I enjoyed reading something different from Me Before You, the historical context that the storyline has, and the intertwining that develops between the stories of the two protagonists; I really enjoyed the reading. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 23, 2020 A unique novel that shook me, it's admirable how a person with their imagination and narrative can make others feel such deep things! Highly recommend, I would read it again. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 3, 2020 The story of Sophy, her sister Heléne, and their struggle.
Liv's life and how a nearly hundred-year-old painting connects her to Sophy, leading her to love her story, a story that prompts her to turn the page. As always, Jojo Moyes does not disappoint me and makes me feel each of the emotions of her characters through her books. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5May 1, 2020 The first part of the novel, which is focused on Sophie, I read in one go. The second part felt a bit slower to me. Still, I enjoyed the reading a lot. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jan 13, 2020 I really liked the book, although it wasn’t one of those romantic novels that make you cry with emotion (I like those). The part about Sophie struck me as wonderful, both the story and the way it is written. I enjoy stories of struggle and survival in the context of war conflicts, which show the worst and best of the human spirit. The part about Liv was harder for me to read, probably because of the omniscient narrator as I sometimes got lost about who the text was referring to. I should clarify that at first, I didn’t like Liv very much; I found her stubborn and obstinate.
I loved the ending; some threads are tied up and one is left to the reader's imagination.
 Highly recommended. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nov 28, 2019 One thing I should clarify is that I'm not a big fan of young adult literature, but there are titles that catch my attention, like The Girl You Left Behind. My opinion is that the author should not have included Liv's story, as it made the reading slow; Sophie’s story is very touching, as it shows us that despite adversities, love can endure. Edouard and Sophie overcame life's obstacles and have the life they deserve. I emphasize again that the reason I don't like young adult books much is because of their endings, which tend to want to be like Disney tales "they lived happily ever after." Despite that, the book does not disappoint. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nov 22, 2019 I cried, laughed... suffered throughout the entire saga. It is priceless. I carry it in my heart. I'm glad that JoJo is giving Louisa a breather. I adore how she writes just like Diana Gabaldon. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Apr 14, 2019 The best story I have read in my life, I fell in love with this book. The lesson it teaches is very good; learning to let go in order to keep living, I believe that completely changed my life. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Mar 25, 2019 It wasn't my favorite book, but it was fine. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nov 15, 2018 It is the story of two young women, separated by a century: Sophie, a Frenchwoman from the early 20th century, who is married to an Impressionist painter and faces the onslaught of World War I and the invasion of the Germans into her village. And then there is Liv, a widow of a renowned London architect in the early 21st century.
They both share possession of the painting "The Girl You Left Behind," painted by Sophie's husband and given to Liv by her late husband as a wedding gift, but is the painting really theirs?
Moreover, they share many other qualities in common. Both are women who endure terrible falls but rise again, and both are willing to fight for what they love at any cost. I would say they are like sisters, only separated by time.
Aside from a few minor inconsistencies in the story (which is why I deducted some points), it is a captivating read that doesn't let go. (Translated from Spanish)

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jun 30, 2018 "The Girl You Left Behind," by Jojo Moyes
Very entertaining. It presents two stories separated by a century, where two women face the pain of their husband's absence and find themselves linked by a painting and its history.
The narrative leaves me with the idea that after a grieving process we must give room for a new life. An essential aspect is making the decision to let go of what is hurting us to open ourselves to new experiences with the intention of becoming better by participating in positive experiences. On the other hand, in times of crisis and war, family and community support is vital, although difficult.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5May 31, 2018 I loved it, it's a very moving story because of Sophie's situation and her time. It always reminds us of the value and meaning of love. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5May 7, 2018 I liked it a lot, but... What I really enjoyed was Sophie’s story. Every time the story jumped to Liv's life, I found the reading very tedious, especially the story between Paul and Olivia, which I consider not credible at all. Personally, I like any novel that touches on historical themes if it is well done, and in this case, I can say it is. I would have liked a book solely about Sophie, but you can't have it all. (Translated from Spanish)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mar 19, 2018 Oh wow!!!!! What can I say about this novel? Impressive? I can't find the words to describe this novel, one of my favorites without a doubt. These stories teach that sometimes a simple memory, no matter how small, can become the only thing you have and you cling to it so much that you wouldn't hesitate to go to great lengths to keep it. I loved the stories!!!!! and the best book I have ever read. (Translated from Spanish)
