“[Patti] Murin's portrayal of Emma is captivating--a blend of sass, humor, and empathy with impeccable timing and nuances.”—AudioFile
She’s rewriting his love story. But can she rewrite her own?
Emma Wheeler desperately longs to be a screenwriter. She’s spent her life studying, obsessing over, and writing romantic comedies—good ones! That win contests! But she’s also been the sole caretaker for her kind-hearted dad, who needs full-time care. Now, when she gets a chance to re-write a script for famous screenwriter Charlie Yates—The Charlie Yates! Her personal writing god!—it’s a break too big to pass up.
Emma’s younger sister steps in for caretaking duties, and Emma moves to L.A. for six weeks for the writing gig of a lifetime. But what is it they say? Don’t meet your heroes? Charlie Yates doesn’t want to write with anyone—much less “a failed, nobody screenwriter.” Worse, the romantic comedy he’s written is so terrible it might actually bring on the apocalypse. Plus! He doesn’t even care about the script—it’s just a means to get a different one green-lit. Oh, and he thinks love is an emotional Ponzi scheme.
But Emma’s not going down without a fight. She will stand up for herself, and for rom-coms, and for love itself. She will convince him that love stories matter—even if she has to kiss him senseless to do it. But . . . what if that kiss is accidentally amazing? What if real life turns out to be so much . . . more real than fiction? What if the love story they’re writing breaks all Emma’s rules—and comes true?
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.
Editor's Note
Meta rom-com…
Aspiring screenwriter Emma Wheeler jumps at the chance to work with her Hollywood hero, Charlie Yates, whose new rom-com screenplay needs lots of work. The only problem? Charlie hates his overly enthusiastic co-writer almost as much as he hates romance. Center’s romantic comedy is full of dating hijinks and our favorite tropes, which are well balanced with the protagonists’ emotional growth.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 13, 2025 I absolutely adored this story! Charlie and Emma were meant for each other. Cheers to another happily ever after!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5May 28, 2025 Meh too cheesy, also I wish the main character had more of a backbone.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dec 13, 2024 I loved it, such a rom com especially the ending.. so cute so cheesy!!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sep 23, 2024 Charlie Yates is extremely toxic. I liked the main character and her family’s backstory, but I was not into the romance in this book at all. I’m actually kind of concerned that there’s not more reviews calling out Charlie’s behavior.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Aug 31, 2024 I can’t stand listening to narrator Patti Murin. Will get the e-book from the library.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Aug 9, 2024 Not for me. I can't get past the main character.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 15, 2024 I absolutely LOVED this book! I didn’t want it to end! The characters, the story line, the ending…it was all AMAZING!!! This one is definitely causing a book hangover!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jun 25, 2024 Mehh I'm not sure how I feel about this one.
I loved some parts of this book so much and couldn't stand others.
Also the male MC Charlie said a lot of hurtful things about and to the FMC throughout this book but never apologized. I understand he was supposed to be this grumpy, reclusive writer, but sometimes he was just plain mean. (Or course there were some scenes I was swooning over him).
Also loved some scenes with the FMC, and again, hated others. She was straight up nasty to her sister at some times and then got upset when her sister finally said something back to her??
Also there was some awkward breaking the 4th wall randomly spread throughout but it kinda missed the mark for me.
I did love the audio Narration of this. Patti Murin nailed it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jun 22, 2024 I laughed, I cried, I loved! Another great book from a great author!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jun 21, 2024 Somehow I'd never been aware of Katherine Center's books until a couple of years ago, when I read The Bodyguard. It was, to use a rom-commy phrase, insta-love. The Rom-Commers has cemented my insta-love into perma-love. (If that's not a thing, it should be. Just sayin'...)
I so enjoyed this story of a woman who's always dreamed of being a screenwriter, but a tragic accident has left her as the sole caretaker for her father. When an old friend offers her the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to write with her screenwriting idol, she reluctantly gives in to her father and sister's demands that she take advantage of her opportunity. She ends up moving into the writer's mansion for six weeks to help him rework his amazingly bad script for a rom-com. I loved these two characters together. They were funny and imperfect and real. They'd both been through some stuff, their reactions and outlooks on life were very different in many ways, but all informed by the stuff they'd experienced. One of the truisms of reading a romance is that we know where the two main characters are going to end up. It's just a matter of the road they take to get there. And this journey was thoroughly enjoyable for me. I listened to the audiobook, and Patti Murin's narration was perfect, hitting all the right notes for all the different emotions involved.
Now bring on Katherine Center's backlist to keep me happy until her next release!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jun 18, 2024 Emma yearns to be a screenwriter. She has studied and written rom-comm’s her whole career. She has even won awards! But she hasn’t been able to fulfill it due to being the full-time caretaker of her kind-hearted dad. She is his sole caretaker until she gets a chance to help rewrite a screenplay of a famous screenwriter who doesn’t believe in romance. Her sister steps in for 6 weeks as caretaker so Emma can go off to LA. It’s a chance of a lifetime rewriting a screenplay with Charlie Yates the famous screenwriter.
Charlie Yates doesn’t want to write with anyone and never has. It’s the worse screenplay he’s ever written but he doesn’t really care about it. It’s his first Rom-Comm. Emma has her work cut out for her. She must make Charlie believe in romance in order to help him write a better screenplay about romantic comedies. Even if, she has to break every rule in the books. She stands up for herself, romantic comedies and love. She may even have to kiss him to make him start believing in love. Was it an amazing kiss or not?
This was my first Katherine Center novel and won’t be my last! Katherine Center makes you chuckle with some of the mishaps with Emma proving to Charlie that there is romance in this world! Katherine writes true Romantic comedies herself! She makes the reader believe in romance through showing Charlie how to become a romantic. There are twist and turns and ups and downs. It makes you laugh and then makes you almost cry. The deep serious side doesn’t take away from the story but really adds to it! She has strong believable characters with a strong family feel. She teaches you more about romance itself! You won’t want to miss this one! I will definitely be listening to more of her books!
The narrator did a fabulous job, has a pleasant voice and is easy to listen to! Her speed is right on and enunciation is very clear! She brings the story to life!
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers in letting me read this book and allowing me to leave an honest review.
