About this audiobook
"Home Front is Hannah's crowning achievement."—The Huffington Post
In this powerhouse of a novel, Kristin Hannah explores the intimate landscape of a troubled marriage with this provocative and timely portrait of a husband and wife, in love and at war.
All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost. . . .
Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then a deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider, she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own—for everything that matters to his family.
At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family, Home Front is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor, and ultimately, hope.
"Hannah has written a remarkable tale of duty, love, strength, and hope that is at times poignant and always thoroughly captivating and relevant." —Library Journal (starred review)

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be an awe-inspiring and heartbreaking story that touches on themes of hope and understanding. The book explores the topic of PTSD and offers a good message. While some readers found the story compelling and relatable, others felt that it lacked detail and had missing chunks in the audio version. Overall, the book is worth a read for those interested in emotional and heartfelt stories.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Aug 11, 2025 Such unrelatable characters. You mean to tell me that a SOLDIER mom and a famous cut-throat attorney are being bullied by snot-nosed, pimple faced, rude, nasty, disrespectful girls? A 12 year old and a 4 year old little Bi***s. Wow. Disgusting characters. Just couldn't get into the story because of that.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jun 21, 2025 Good book. I found some of the dialogue a bit whiny. Good, but not my fav of her books. Still worth reading for sure.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 27, 2024 I’m a former USAF RN-‘Nam era. My family is military to the nth degree. My copter pilot nephew suffers from PTSD..so yes this scenario was not new to me. Kristin Hannah does a remarkable job making points, not least about the woeful lack of help for our returning troops.
VA? Hahahaha. can’t laugh long enough. So frickin useless.
My nephew , 3 deployments beginning with Desert Storm, landing his Blackhawk in the desert at night behind enemy lines; rescuing troops—and his Apache days, watching his friends die, not all due to enemy fire, but to inadequate support, maintenance-& having to buy their own protective gear!! Help? Well—
The latest from the VA was “no psychiatrist available for him til next year”.
So he has nightmares, hits the bourbon..and misses his dying wife who’s in hospice in another state because he hasn’t enough money to pay for her care!
 His case is not unique.
So, I read this book, listened to it-& can’t get it out of my mind.
 Know anyone with PTSD?
 read this book.
Know nothing about the military? read this book.
just looking for an excellent engrossing unputdownable book? read, listen-and then share…
 this excellent book.
 I’d give 10 stars if I could
Oh-I’m also a writer..so I can say with certainty that her characters, plot, the very emotions felt by the characters are spot on.
Kristin had me with “The Women”—but this one surpasses it by far.
I’m glad she’s a prolific writer, because I’m on to her
 next book!
Don’t walk-RUN! to get this one

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Aug 13, 2024 The book had my attention at the very beginning and never stopped. The relationship between the mother and her daughters had me in tears. Loved Joleen and Tammy’s friendship. Great read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jun 21, 2024 The realization and understanding of PTSD and how much it affects our soldiers and their families. More people should read this book who are on either side of the debate about war and conflict. I guess we will always have conflict, hate and war but our country should seriously consider how to avoid putting our young men and women into these situations without consideration of the consequences. This book was thoughtfully and beautifully done.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5May 6, 2024 Another fabulous book they end your eyes to the ongoing struggles of our vets!! Another tear jerker for sure! Thank you Kristin Hannah!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Nov 2, 2023 Missing huge chunks of the book!! Read this elsewhere! I’m so bummed I have to start over.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 I wasn't sure I was going to like this one, but as with all of the authors books I have read each one is better than the last. She has a gift with character development and pacing the plot just right. This book tells the story of a female Black Hawk pilot who is deployed and must leave her family. Told from the points of view of her husband and herself, the story takes us through how war impacts not only those who are deployed but also those left behind.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 25, 2023 Enjoyed this book. Laughed and cried. Another good heart felt book.

 5⭐️ book though
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 Great story that helped my understand PTSD much better. I liked the interview with the author at the end.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sep 25, 2023 The worst book I read for this author and the worst narration!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 25, 2023 Good message. Not my favorite Kristin Hannah book but worth the read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 Loved the story. Lulu was a little irritating though. Worth the listen
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 so unbearably sad and raw, an excellent story to listen to
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 25, 2023 Jolene and Michael are a ‘normal’ couple with two kids, a lovely home… and a crumbling marriage. The distance between them seems to be becoming unsurmountable and Michael caves one day and says he doesn’t love Jolene anymore. A hard statement to overcome at the best of times but when your wife is suddenly called to active service and you haven’t retracted it, what comes next can only be agonising for both parties. Thus begins a novel that is beset with struggles. For Jolene as she faces fear, loss and displacement, mourning the loss of friends and colleagues at the same time as she fears her marriage is over and her children’s resentment and confusion is unsurmountable. For Michael as he struggles with life alone with the children and the guilt over his cruel announcement. For the children as they live in fear and confusion over their mother’s absence.Sometimes the greatest thing about receiving review copies unexpectedly is that you get a book you would never have picked up under any other circumstances and find you really enjoy it. I didn’t think Home Front was necessarily for me from the blurb but by the second chapter I knew I could settle into it. This is an excellent story with many facets, delving into the intricacies of relationships but also raising more specific points, such as the pressures on military families, coping with time away from home, injury, bereavement. The novel also skims over PTSD, as Michael (who is a lawyer) becomes involved in defending a soldier who is accused of murdering his young wife. This is a very compelling and emotive read, which kept me turning the pages. It’s thought-provoking and well written, all characters displaying emotional strengths and weaknesses that make them – and their struggles – seem very realistic. Kristin Hannah has produced an excellent novel here and should be applauded for raising some difficult issues in such a sensitive and insightful way.**Review originally published on Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dave. I received a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I did not receive any additional compensation and all views are my own.**
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 25, 2023 This story has a lot of potential and it’s an easy quick listen. The story telling just was just too simple and it deserved much more detail.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 As always Kristin Hanna is compelling and touches all our true feelings ... thank you??
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 Being from a military family and knowing the hardships one faced it really touched base with me. Beautifully told and related to the characters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 25, 2023 An awe-inspiring yet heartbreaking story that, thankfully, ends in a hopeful way. Many tears!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5May 31, 2025 Kristin Hannah does it again. This might not have been my favorite book of hers, but she always ropes me in with these characters and somehow I find myself feeling all of their emotions. It happened pretty fast with this book and maybe because it took such a sharp turn from normal life to war and then coming home. I feel like this portrayed the difficulties of establishing a new normalcy after tragedy. Overall, if you want to cry, read this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Feb 23, 2025 Jolene is a helicopter pilot in the army. Her unit is being deployed to Iraq. Her marriage starts to fall apart just before she leaves and her two daughters don't know how to navigate without their mother. Jolene comes home injured from the war. The whole family has to learn to cope with Jolene because she is not the same person she was when she left. This is a very touching story of a family who struggles and then finds its way.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Mar 10, 2024 I’m not from a military family and know few people who serve so this was a very enlightening story. The author never disappoints! Unfortunately, I struggled to finish the book because side the reader was very difficult to listen to. So many different voices, the dramatic scenes were often sounded childish and overdone. I’ve listened to LONG novels read by Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep was were impossible to stop listening to—no weird voices or overly dramatic reading. I hate to be critical, but wanted to be honest in my comments.1 person found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Feb 9, 2024 Yet another Kristin Hannah novel that absolutely rips my heart out and gets at the core of human emotions and conditions. I ugly cried. 5 stars
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5May 28, 2022 A bit of a hard read, likely because of the war in Europe now. Jolene is a married guard helicopter pilot and 2 daughters. When she's deployed to Iraq with her best friend and fellow pilot, Tami, hubby Michael needs to step up to the plate quickly. Balancing Jo's story, is Michael defending a vet who killed his wife during a PTSD flashback. Of course, a kindly psychiatrist is involved in the case, which also helps Michael understand his wife quite a bit better, because things are very rocky when she gets back wounded when her Black Hawk was shot down.
