Abstract. Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is of high importance for city dwellers especially in medium-sized cities in sub-Saharan Africa as it fulfills a wide range of multifunctional urban needs. However, the extent of recent agricultural land use dynamics in sub-Saharan African cities under rapid urbanization so far remains unclear. This study assessed the operationality of a rule-based, hierarchical classification of RapidEye satellite imagery to monitor land use and land cover (LULC) dynamics from 2010 to 2017 with a focus on UPA and its patch sizes on the example of the rapidly growing medium-sized city Nakuru, Kenya. The hierarchical system was able to provide a high-resolution, multitemporal, area-wide data set, and proved beneficial through a high flexibility in considering each class separately. Though the approach offered limitations in distinguishing between agricultural crops, the produced data set gave insights about intense LULC dynamics and high land use pressure indicated, in particular, by an increase of sealed areas by 83%, an ongoing expansion of agricultural land and high variations in the detected classes between the years. In the context of data shortage, the findings contribute to the understanding of urbanization patterns in sub-Saharan Africa.

Online retail is currently profoundly restructuring the working conditions in the retail sector. Existing studies generally describe the working conditions in the large warehouses of online retail as ‘digital Taylorism’. This article broadens this perspective and draws on the theoretical concept of the local labour control regime. It explores how managements’ technological and social labour control strategies vary spatially between online retail warehouses located in inner and outer metropolitan areas of the four largest German cities. The study uses qualitative methods and is mainly based on expert interviews with executives, representatives of trade unions and works councils, representatives of associations, and further experts. This study gains insights on the spatial variety of labour control and thus is relevant for international research on labour control and for practitioners’ ability to create decent and humane work.

In many regions of the Global South, introduced crops have led to a loss of biodiversity and left the food system vulnerable to climate change. As a result, the (re-)introduction of indigenous food plants (IFPs) into agriculture is discussed as a way to a more sustainable and resilient food production, which might also be feasible for Southern small-scale garden farmers. In Cape Town (South Africa), the first attempts to commercialize IFPs of the Cape Floristic Region are currently being made. By using a value chain perspective, this study analyzes the opportunities and challenges for farmers to integrate IFPs into regional commercial agri-food chains. Based on qualitative interviews and ethnographic participant observation, we identify and explain different challenges and potentials: Challenges include the complex harvest licensing procedure and limited seed/cutting access for growers, limited capabilities and capacity of growers, the competition with subsidized conventional produc...

Abstract This article contributes an economic geography perspective on the envisioning and implementing of mega-infrastructure projects in Africa. Focusing on development corridors and their implicit spatio-temporality of “global integration,” we conceptualize corridors as spatial imaginaries for strategic coupling processes. We distinguish between emptying the future and claiming space as two fundamental mechanisms of spatial imaginaries. Together, these mechanisms can render crucial territorial and relational “insides” and “outsides” available for coupling processes. Spatial imaginaries are then sources of power in the coupling between corridor regions and global production networks. Empirically, we focus on the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) in relation to the coupling process between global fertilizer manufacturer YARA International and the Tanzanian agricultural market. Facing unfavourable coupling conditions with Tanzania’s fertilizer sector, the early mobilization of SAGCOT served to promote a narrow imaginary of Tanzania’s agrarian future, thereby making a soft claim to territorial (through the corridor) and networked space (through a network of corridor stakeholders). Although YARA and Tanzanian counterparts initially capitalized on SAGCOT’s mobilization due to its promise to transform Tanzanian agriculture, a gradual disenchantment with SAGCOT’s vision and its subsequent disintegration jeopardizes these coupling process today. Approaching corridors as spatial imaginaries reveals therefore their instrumental but fragile power in coupling processes. Such power is not about blunt domination or coercion, but rather builds on persuasion and consent. Only when spatial imaginaries succeed in maintaining persuasive arguments about the future, is their function of initiating and stabilizing otherwise unfavourable coupling processes available.

Even before the current covid-19-pandemic, online grocery retailing in Germany is achieving a high level of momentum, giving rise to new and increasingly hybrid forms of operation and distribution models in the retail sector. These new operational forms of complementary, pure and combined e-commerce are accompanied by spatial changes of the individual value-added steps, e.g. in the areas of logistics, store structure and transfer of goods, which have hardly been investigated so far. Using three selected cases studies (Picnic, Wochenmarkt24 and Rewe) newer types of spatial logistics and distribution structures were identified and different location factors of these were listed. Thus, the paper illustrates that, in addition to the typical factors of location selection for distribution warehouses (proximity to customers, employees and suppliers) in food retailing, other aspects, such as a shortening of the last mile, a minimum or maximum density of households in the surrounding area or...

Analysing the ongoing changes and dynamics in rural development from a functional perspective through a series of case studies from the global north and south, this volume deepens our understanding of the importance of new functional and multifunctional approaches in policy, practice and theory. In rural areas of industrialized societies, food production as a basis for growth and employment has been declining for many decades. In the Global South, on the other hand, food production is still often the most important factor for socio-economic development. However, rural areas both in the industrialized north and in the global south are facing new challenges which lead to significant changes and threats to their development. New forms of food production, but also new functional (e.g. housing or business parks) and often multifunctional approaches are being discussed and practiced yet it remains unclear the extent to which these result in better or more sustainable development of rural areas.

In the context of land use changes in sub-Saharan Africa and especially deforestation due to agricultural intensifi cation, this study aimed to characterize recent land use developments in eastern parts of the Mt. Kenya region. A remote sensing approach with high resolution RapidEye satellite images from 2010 and 2015 was conducted. The main research goals were to (1) clarify in how far RapidEye data can contribute to a land use change analysis in the small-scale farming-driven Mt. Kenya region; (2) detect general land use and land cover structures and changes between 2010 and 2015; (3) examine how far forest encroachment can be reduced with the arrangement of Nyayo Tea Zones. The results showed that it is possible to detect main land cover classes. Diff erent limitations of the classifi cation occurred due to heterogeneous characteristics of the land cover and the spatial and spectral mixture of diff erent areas (e.g. agriculture and scrublands). The land use pattern can be describ...

The internationalization of value chains and the broad proliferation of different public and private standards have led to a formalization and standardization of value chains, production systems and their constitutional actors and linkages in the Global South. Recent studies on the integration of Southern production systems in international value chains, however, show that this is only partly the case. These studies identify limits and insufficiencies of formal and standardized coordination and control systems as well as a neglect of regional peculiarities, individual aims and capabilities of the embedded stakeholders in the South by the coordinating lead firms from the North. As a result, informal actors and arrangements continue to be, and even continue to develop as, important parts of Southern production systems. With reference to the concept of informality, principal-agent theory and convention theory, this study aims to contribute to the recent conceptual debate on global valu...

In the last two decades various studies have analyzed the structures of and flows in international value chains (including two special issues in DIE ERDE in 2007 and 2014). Based on the concepts of Global Commodity Chains (Gereffi 1996; Kulke 2007), Global Value Chains (Gereffi et al. 2005; Nadvi 2008), Global Production Networks (Henderson et al. 2002; Hughes et al. 2008), its revised version GPN 2.0 (Yeung 2015; Yeung and Coe 2015) and further related approaches researchers have analyzed the different dynamics (e.g. upgrading), the coordination and the governance of these chains (e.g. through standards and conventions). From a geographical perspective research foci included their spatial patterns and regional implications, often with a focus on North-South relationships with powerful Northern lead firms and weaker Southern suppliers (Ponte and Gibbon 2005; Bolwig et al. 2010).

Insufficient access to markets, limited financial transactions, and a lack of information and knowledge often restrict opportunities for small-scale farmers to link up with commercial value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa. Advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially mobile phones and the internet, have expanded the possibility to communicate across geographical distances and to integrate into commercial value chains. By using a novel combination of conceptual considerations on ICTs, value chains, and relational proximity, this paper assesses: 1. How the use of ICTs affects the integration of small-scale farmers into the value chains (by analysing the information and knowledge flow, the financial and market transactions) and 2. to what extent the use of ICTs is on the other side influenced by the value chain context (i.e. the structure and coordination of the chain and the relational proximity between farmer and buyer). Our findings showed that even simple ...

The poster submitted to the ISPRS Congress 2016 in Prague illustrates the concept behind the research project in its initial stage. The project concerns recent dynamics of urban and peri-urban agriculture (PUA) in middle-size cities of central Kenya. On the date of submission, only general research ideas were presented due to the unavailability of remote sensing data at the early stage of the project.

Through examining the example of commercial small-scale horticultural farmers in Mt. Kenya region and Mwanza region, this empirical study aims to provide an explanation for why different perspectives on the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the Global South exist. A mixed methods approach was used to show that ICT usage can lead to significant improvements, including access to simple and complex knowledge and the development of business linkages. However, the influence of ICT depends on the different ICT usage types and the capabilities of farmers to use them. This paper gives a differentiated view on factors influencing the effects of ICT on small-scale farming. It provides a typology of ICT that helps to explains some of the potential effects of ICT usage in the Global South. The results contribute to the current applied and conceptual debate on market access for smallholders and Information and Communication Technologies for Development.
