Quantifying the relationship between mesozooplankton and water quality parameters identifies the factors that structure the mesozooplankton community and can be used to generate hypotheses regarding the mechanisms that control the mesozooplankton population and potentially the trophic network. To investigate this relationship, mesozooplankton and water quality data were collected in Florida Bay from 1994 to 2004. Three key characteristics were found in the mesozooplankton community structure: (1) there are significant differences between the four sub-regions of Florida Bay; (2) there is a break in May of 1997 with significant differences before and after this date; and (3) there is a positive correlation between mesozooplankton abundance and salinity. The latter two characteristics are closely correlated with predator abundance, indicating the importance of top-down control. Hypersaline periods appear to provide a refuge from predators, allowing mesozooplankton to increase in abundance despite the increased physiological stress.

In 2010, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) produced a mass-manufactured sweater as a part of the official merchandise for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The sweater turned into a national media controversy, with reporters and the public questioning whether the HBC committed an act of appropriation. In local and provincial newspapers, representatives of the Cowichan Nation stated that the HBC sweater shared many of the same characteristics as a Cowichan sweater. The Cowichan sweater is a traditional Indigenous hand-knitted item crafted by several Coast Salish bands throughout Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia; the main producers of the sweater are knitters from the Cowichan Nation, located in what is now known as Duncan, BC. In my paper, I will analyze how the HBC's imitations alter the Cowichan sweater's aesthetics, as well as affect those who create the original garments. I will argue that the creation of the HBC Olympic sweater constitutes as a form of cultural appropriation since the spinoff sweaters have appropriated designs, which derive from traditional forms of knowledge and traditional practices of blanket weaving. Secondly, I will demonstrate that the Cowichan people have an economic reliance on knitting, noting that this art is either a main or supplementary income for families who may already have a high need for economic assistance. Finally, I suggest that such acts of appropriation misrepresent Cowichan peoples and are a continuation of colonization. Without respecting Indigenous traditional practices and disregarding the economic impact of appropriation, there is a perpetuation of oppression for the Cowichan peoples, as well as any Indigenous nation facing appropriation. This is especially important as appropriation of Indigenous cultures continues to occur in Canada, even after the country acknowledged the importance of Indigenous rights and reconciliation.

The great Aqua Augusta served the Naples Bay area with fresh water during the time of the Roman Empire. There are very prominent features of the Aqua Augusta, some that are extraordinary when considering other great aqueducts in the Roman Empire. For example, the deep tunnels allowed access to a spring water source from a separate watershed, which resulted in transbasin diversion of the water supply. Each one of the prominent features was engineered to provide water to the public for various uses. The prominent structures included other shallower tunnels (with two major types of construction), hydraulic chutes, arcades (one to an island), baths (located along a well-traveled road), and storage reservoirs. Also, there is the epigraph discovered at the water source. Important villas that may have influenced the alignment of the aqueduct are also discussed.

The nine organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the sediment samples taken from Gwangyang Bay, which is a heavy chemical industrial region in South Korea, are analyzed to evaluate their contaminations during the past 50 years. The vertical distributions of ΣOCPs concentration in the sediment core were in good agreement with the temporal amount of pesticides used in South Korea except for the top sediment layer. The DDTs were predominant, their concentrations ranging from 78.0 to 202 pg/g dry wt and attributed more than 60% to ΣOCPs in all the sediment layers. Based on the ratio of DDT metabolite compositions, the DDT contamination in the top layer might be caused from recent input. This is due to the highest residual concentration of OCPs in the top layer. Although HCB and mirex have been unregistered as pesticides in South Korea, two compounds were detectable in all of the sediment samples in the range from 0.243 to 16.7 pg/g dry wt in the study area. The emission source of HCB in the sediment core could be estimated to be due to incomplete combustion in the industrial chemical processes rather than pesticide application. Regarding horizontal distribution of ΣOCPs, the concentration was slightly higher than for the inner bay than the outer bay. The OCPs in the sediments of Gwangyang Bay were compared with those of other countries by hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis.

The South African national government has bestowed certain authority on local governments in order for community services to be delivered by officials who are closer to the community and who will consider community needs. Post-apartheid South Africa is confronted with a major challenge in ensuring that municipalities deliver optimal and professional services to ratepayers of all ethnic and diverse cultures. Municipalities have important objectives to implement, while service delivery is one of its major goals. The ratepayers in the NMBM have complained and protested against poor service delivery that resulted from poor job performance by NMBM employees. San Quintin Bay, Mexico, is a hypersaline coastal lagoon where the main external forcing of physical and biogeochemical processes is oceanic. Non-conservative fluxes of inorganic N (ΔDIN) and P (ΔDIP), and aspects of net ecosystem metabolism were studied in this lagoon during August 1995, August 1996, and February 1996, by following the LOICZ budgetary modeling approach. The whole-system water exchange time during summer (≈13 d) was shorter than in winter (≈26 d) as northwesterly winds enhancing mixing with the ocean are more intense during the spring-summer upwelling season. Whole-bay ΔDIP values of +0.2 to +0.3 mmol m−2 d−1 in August, and <+0.01 mmol m−2 d−1 in February indicate that the system is a net source of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). DIP fluxes from the Bay to the ocean during August are probably balanced by a net import of particulate organic matter between 1,000–1,300 × 103 mol C d−1, equivalent to a net ecosystem production (NEP) between −24 and −31 mmol C m−2 d−1. ΔDIN showed opposite trends in August 1995 and August 1996, with a net import of 13×103 mol N d−1 and a net export of 30× 103 mol N d−1, respectively. However, N fixation minus denitrification (“apparent denitrification”) estimates of ≈−4 mmol N m−2 d−1 in both periods indicate that San Quintin Bay is a net sink of nitrogen. Results from a 3-box model indicate that during summer Box C, adjacent to the ocean, contributed 70–80% of the excess DIP produced in the whole-system. This observation and high apparent denitrification values of ≈−7 mmol N m−2 d−1 at the entrance of the Bay, suggest that the net heterotrophic condition of San Quintin Bay in summer is largely determined by imports of labile phytoplanktonic carbon generated in the adjacent ocean during upwelling. A net flux of organic carbon of 30×106 mol C yr−1 was estimated from Box C, adjacent to the ocean, to Box B, locally known as Bahia Falsa, which is the area designated for oyster aquaculture in the lagoon. It is estimated that this net organic carbon supply is almost equivalent to the annual oyster food demand; our estimate is that oyster aquaculture in San Quintin Bay accounts for the vast majority of the net heterotrophy of Bahia Falsa.
