JOSEPH WY. PHINNEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN TYPE FOUNDERS COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 28,253, dated February 1, 1898.
Application filed August 19, 897- serial No- 648,83'7. Term of patent '7 years.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PHINNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented a 5 certain new and useful Design for a Font of Gothic Type, of which the following is a specification.
My design for a font of Gothic type is clearly illustrated in the accompanying typographo ical impression.
The heavy shading and the square etfect of the characters are the essential features of the design.
' All the letters of the upper case with the 5 exception of the letters .I and Q are of a uniform height and depth. The right-hand inclined line of the letter A is heavy and the diagonal left-hand line is united to the righthand line at the upper end. The two lines o are connected by a light cross-line slightly above the center. The vertical line of the letter B is heavy and the loops projecting fromthis line are heavier at the center than at each end. The letter C is in the form of 5 a curve, the line diminishing in thickness to ward each end. The letter D is in keeping with the letter B and the single loop is heavier at the center than at the ends. The
. vertical lines of the letters E and F are heavy ,0 and the upper cross-lines and the middle lines are light, and the lower line of the letter E is also light. The letter G is in keeping with the letter C, and the two vertical lines of the letter H are heavy and the cross- 5 line is light. The single line of the letter I is heavy. The line of the letter J is heavy and terminates in a tapered loop. The vertical line of the letter K is heavy, the upper inclined line is light, and the lower inclined o line is heavy. The vertical line of the letter L is heavy and the lower line light. The right-hand line of the letter M is heavy and the left-hand line is light, while one diagonal line is heavy and the other light. The two ;5 vertical lines of the letter N are both light Q.
and the inclined line is heavy. The letter O is in the form of an oval, being heavy at each side and narrow at top and bottom. The vertical line of the letter P is heavy and the loop is heavy at the center and is tapered toward each end. The letter Q is in keeping with the letter O, but somewhat narrower, and an ogee-curved tail extends through the base of the letter. The letter R is similar to the letter P, with the addition of the inclined heavy line. The letter S is made of a double scroll heavy at the center and light at each end. The vertical line of the letter T is heavy and the cross-line is light. The letter U is in the form of a loop, the right-hand line is light, and the left-hand line heavy. In the letter V the right-hand inclined line is light and the left-hand inclined line is heavy. In the letter IV the right-hand inclined line, as well as one of the central inclined lines, is light and the left-hand line and the other inclined line is heavy. I11 the letter X one of the inclined lines is light and the other heavy. In the letter Ythe vertical line is heavy and the left-hand diagonal line is also heavy and the right-hand line is light. The inclined line of the letter Z is heavy and the upper and lower lines are light.
It will be seen that the letters have the corners well defined, giving a sharp square appearance to the font.
The lower-case letters and numerals are in keeping with the upper-case letters.
I claim The design for a font of Gothic type as herein described and as shown in the accompanying typographical impression.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH IV. PHINNEY.
