DESIGN FOR A FONT OF TYPE.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 30,826, dated May I6, 1899.
Application filed March 27,1899. $erialllo. 710,716- Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PHINNEY, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Type,of which the following is a specification.
This design comprises capital letters, small letters, Arabic numerals, the character &, the dollar and pound-sterling marks, and punctuation-marks.
The general characteristic of the font is }a vertical heavy-faced letter, in which the shaded and unshaded portions are of nearly the same width and the letters themselves are fairly broad in proportion to their height. The capital letters have serifs also quite broad and heavy, the top serifs of the letter M approaching quite closely, and the top serif of the left-hand portion of the letter N extending to the right beyond the diagonal downward characteristic. The outer line of the upper extremity of the letters 0 and G is horizontal, and the outer right-hand line of said extremity is at right angles thereto. The lower extremity of each of these letters also terminates in a vertical line, the characteristic cross-bar of the letter G being as broad as the serifs of the squareletters. The lower I terminal of the letter J and the characteristic terminals of the letters Q and R taper almost to a point. The characteristic crossing of the capital T ends in two lines slanting parallel with each other toward the rear, and the 1 upward extremity of the'character & termitical of the letters m and n, of the vertical of the letters p and q, and of the two upper characteristics of the letter u, as well as the base of its lower right-hand vertical and in the two extremities of the letter z. The right-hand projection of the letter r is substantially lozenge-shaped. The lower terminal of the letter j tapers to a point, while the lower terminal of the letter y broadens out to the full width of its heaviest stroke. The light portions of said small letters are all of them quite heavy, the letters themselves being quite vertically condensed.
The curved numerals are characterized by a sudden tapering into a p0int-as, for example, in the upper terminal of the numerals 2 and 6, in both terminals of the numeral 3, and the lower terminals of the numerals 5 and 9. The upper and lower extremities of the numeral 1 lie in parallel lines, and the upper characteristic of the numeral 5 is flat on top and terminates in a point. The pound- Sterling sign is nearly vertical, its upper portion being somewhat heavier than its lower portion. The dots of the punctuation-marks are substantially octagonal in shape, the vertical and horizontal portions being somewhat longer than the diagonal portions. The numerals are all of them of the same height. Their general characteristic and the general characteristic of the punctuation-marks are that they have a very heavy face.
What I claim as my invention is- The design for a font of type, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 22d day of March, 1899.
