A control arrangement for an oil burner comprises a metering valve 7, 8 having a stem 5 axially displaceable under the control of a follower 20 engaging with a cam surface 19 formed by the edge of a plate 18, the plate being secured to a slide which is movable in a plane parallel to the plate, one end of the cam surface being adjustable in the plane of the plate relatively to the slide. The lower end of the stem is of tubular form and slides in a valve housing 3, an elongated slot 8 being formed in the wall of the tube; a shoulder 6 on the stem 5 engages with a seat 7 formed on the housing. The follower 20 is secured to a pivoted lever 21 and is urged into contact with the cam surface 19 by a spring 23 in addition to a spring 10 tending to open the valve. The plate is adjustably secured at its end by screws to the slide which is provided with a rack 13 driven by a pinion 14 secured to a stem 15; an operating knob 17 is mounted on the stem. By rotation of the knob the slot 8 in the valve spindle is raised above the seat 7, the degree of lift being determined by the shape of the cam surface. In order to prevent the valve from being adjusted towards a position in which less than the minimum quantity of oil flows through the valve, the spindle 15 is arranged to move downwardly under the action of a spring 29, a projection on the spindle then engaging the end of the valve spindle 5 and thus forcing the shoulder 6 into contact with the seat 7.
