Abstract

663,927. Manually-actuated valves. JACKSON BOILERS, Ltd., and MUSTILL, C. W. March 17, 1949, No. 6088/49. Class 135. In a tap for liquids, the operating handle 14 is pivotally mounted on an extension 12 of the valve element or plunger 7 and is arranged so that when it is moved in a vertical plane in either of two directions, it opens the valve and is self-returning from each direction and when it is moved in a horizontal plane, the valve is caused to remain open when the handle is moved in one direction and to remain closed when the handle is moved in the opposite direction. The handle 14 has two projections 15 co-operating with a screwed cap 9 which provides a fulcrum for one of the projections when the handle is raised or lowered. When the handle is turned in one direction about a vertical axis one of the projections 15 rides up an inclined abutment 16 formed on the cap 9 as far as a stop 17 and remains in its position of adjustment. The cap 9 carries a pivoted latch 10 engaging a slot 11 in the tap body 1. The valve plunger 7 has a valve head 6 pressed against a seat 5 on a screwed insert 4 by a spring 8. The inlet passage may be cleared on removing a screwed plug 19. In a modification, the inclined abutment 16 is replaced by a collar with an external quick pitch thread, the collar being slidably but non-rotatably keyed to the valve element. On rotation of the handle the collar engages an abutment on the valve element.
