Abstract
522,503. Thermostats. SHERLOCK, J. E., and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Dec. 15, 1938, No. 36575. [Class 135] A thermostat is fitted with means adapted to release a magnetic device when a predetermined temperature is reached to enable an indicating device to be projected into a visible position. The thermostat proper comprises an annular lift valve 3 adapted to be moved away from a seat 2 against the action of a spring 4 by an abutment ring 5 adjustably mounted on a ported thimble held by a spring 8 against a plate 23 bearing on a diaphragm 7. The diaphragm forms the movable wall of a shallow chamber connected by a capillary tube 35 with a thermal feeler. The spring 8 bears against an adjustable abutment 32 held against rotation by grooves in the casing and adjusted by a screwed spindle 10 rotatably mounted in the casing and provided with a manipulating knob 11. A packing 12 supported by a shoulder in the spindle 10 is held against the inside of the casing by a spring 13. The indicating button is normally held retracted within a cavity in the knob 11 by a permanent magnet 17. When the desired temperature is reached a push rod 21 bearing against a projection on the plate 23 engages an adjustable tappet 20 screwed into the indicator to press it away from the magnet and allow a spring 25 to force it out of its cavity until a flange 26 engages a flange 27 on 'the knob. Pilot-light and byepass passages are provided controlled by throttling screws.
