Abstract
487,118. Winding glass &c. threads. SCHLESISCHE SPIEGELGLAS-MANUFACTUR C. TIELSCH GES. Oct. 1, 1937, No. 26600. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1936. [Class 120 (ii)] Threads or filaments of glass or substances having similar properties are wound on to a spool in a layer of air separated from the outer air by a shell or jacket substantially concentric with the spool; currents and variations in the intensity of the static pressure conditions are thus produced in the air layer and tend to carry the thread or filament to be wound towards the spool. As shown the filament 6 formed by a glass particle 5 is carried thereby into an inclined channel-shaped member 12 leading to the space between the spool 7 and the concentric shell or jacket 13 from which space the air currents carry the filament to the spool, the particle 5 and any thick portion of the filament breaking away therefrom and being thrown out through an opening 17 in the jacket 13 ; when the spool is fully wound, a fresh spool is pushed along the shaft 11 to displace the wound spool and take its place so that winding is continuous. The spool has flanges 8 extending closely to the circumference of the jacket which may be provided with openings 16 through which air is drawn ; the openings are disposed in the axial direction of the spool. A number of filaments may be collected by a guide member 19 and wound as a bundle on the spool.
