Abstract
442,846. Metallic-vapour apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. May 11, 1934, No. 14303. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 13, 1934]. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp comprises anodes 4, housed in arms 2, and a liquid cathode 7, which is contained in a chamber arranged at an angle of forty-five degrees to the axis of the tube so that the lamp may be operated in either the vertical or horizontal position without change in the distance between the anodes and cathode. The iron or molybdenum anodes are supported on tungsten leads sealed into the silica container and the lead to the cathode is secured to the container through a graded seal. The anodes are each connected to opposite terminals of the alternating-current supply, one of which is connected to the cathode through a large inductance 9 and the other to the sleeve 8. Starting is effected by means of an evacuated switch 10 which comprises contacts bridged by an armature adapted to be moved to break the circuit by the inductance 9.
