Abstract
511.067. Mercury switches. WALTURDAW CINEMA SUPPLY CO., Ltd., and STUBBS, G. E. Feb. 14, 1938, No. 4577. [Class 38 (v)] A switch for cutting resistance in or out in steps has a number of contacts arranged in pairs, the movement of mercury successively making or breaking the circuit between the members of each pair. L-shaped contact members 1 are sealed in pairs into an evacuated glass vessel 2, and one member of each pair has a leg projecting through one side of the vessel 2 which is connected to a tapping point of a resistance 4, and the other member has a leg projecting through the other side of the vessel 2 which is connected to a common lead 3. Tilting of the tube 2 causes mercury to flow from a bulb 5 and connect in turn downwardly pointing legs of each pair of contacts 1. Alternatively the mercury may be moved by a plunger, or by the vertical movement of a reservoir containing mercury connected by a flexible tube to the tube 2. In a modification, the L-shaped contacts may be threaded on a rod and insulated from the rod and each other, and connection made by relative vertical movement between a trough containing mercury or mercury amalgam, the downwardly projecting legs of the contacts being of different lengths to give a progressive action.
