Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] The cathode drop of a lamp is lowered by producing positive ions by an independent means, which may be an auxiliary discharge at a higher voltage than the main discharge and maintained between a thermionic or other cathode and an auxiliary anode or either of the main electrodes. In a lamp having a sodium and neon or sodium and mercury filling, the colour of the light emitted may be modified by varying the strength of the auxiliary discharge current relatively to that of the main discharge. The auxiliary cathode may be a filament surrounding the main cathode, or a ring in front of it. Two such units may be used for fullwave alternating-current operation. The lamp may be filled with inert gas, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or titanium tetra-chloride, or mercury, sodium, thallium, or cadmium vapour, or mixtures thereof, for example neon at a pressure of from 0À1 mm. to 10 mms.
