Abstract
325,639. Chapman, M. G. Dec. 24, 1928. Starting.-To start a Diesel engine, the compression ratio is reduced by connecting the combustion chamber 24 to external auxiliary chambers 28, 29 by opening a valve 17, which may be the usual pressure-release valve, so that the engine may be turned by hand and operated as a petrol engine, A two-stroke engine is shown and petrol from a chamber 44 is drawn into the transfer passage through a needle-controlled nozzle 52, when a valve 46 is opened by a lever 54, which also opens the valve 17; a flat surface on a cam 60<1> holds open, and lost motion ensures that the valve 46 is opened first and closed last. A sparking plug 34 is provided and after the engine has started the chambers 29, 28 may be cut off in succession by valves 32, 17. In a four-stroke engine the nozzle 52 opens into theair-inlet passage of the cylinder.
