Abstract

136,999. Goss, H. W. May 10, 1919. Regulating. - An engine is provided with a governor for preventing the inlet valve from opening or for cutting off the supply of mixture, the idle suction and compression strokes being utilized for compressing air to be used for starting &c. In one form, Fig. 3, the stem 3 of the gas valve is actuated by a cam 13 through a blade 4 and a die 1 connected to the lever of a governor. An air-discharge valve 5 in the cylinder head leads to a compressed-air receiver and is connected by a lever 8 to a rod 10 engaging the collar 2 on the valve stem 3. In the normal position shown, the discharge valve 5 remains closed. When the die 1 is lifted by the governor, the gas valve remains closed and the rod 10 is over the end of the lever 11 actuated by the cam 13, so that the valve 5 is actuated. In a. modification, the governor is of the variable-admission type, the die 1 being interposed between the ends of a camactuated lever and a lever connected to the valve, and the rod 10 being connected by links to the valve lever. In another form, Fig. 8, the inletvalve cam 22 is movable longitudinally on the cam-shaft and is connected to a cam 12 for actuating the air-discharge valve 5 when the inlet valve is out of action; in a third position, the inlet cam 22 is in action and a starter cam 24 actuates the valve 5, a non-return valve leading to the air receiver being held open. In a further form, an auxiliary valve in the induction pipe is arranged to cut off the fuel supply and to open an air inlet in the side of the induction pipe, and is connected to a slidable cam for actuating the air-discharge valve 5.
