Abstract

270,326. B³chi, A. April 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Cam-actuated pumps; stroke, varying; regulating.-The supply of fuel to an internalcombustion engine is regulated according to the working condition of the air-compressor, either by the pressure of the charging-air, or by the pressure in, or in the supply to, an exhaustdriven turbine actuating the compressor. Fig. 2 shows a fuel pump 22 driven by an eccentric 20 and supplying the engine cylinders by a pipe 25. In addition to the usual regulation of the fuel pump by variation in the time of closing of the suction valve 24 by a governor 8 acting to adjust an eccentric 27 which actuates a plunger 28 and lever 29, the closing of the valve 24 is further controlled by the action of the charging-air pressure and the exhaust or exhaust-turbine pressure on a piston 34. The air is supplied by a pipe 18 and the exhaust by a pipe 19, to opposite sides of the piston 34, which is further acted on bv a spring 37, and is connected by linkage 36 to an eccentric mounting 30 of the lever 29. Hand adjustment is also provided by means of a screw actuated by a hand wheel 38. In a modification, the piston 34 is arranged to hold the suction valve 24 more or less open, so as to reduce or interrupt the supply of fuel, and an additional hand adjustment acts through a lever on the eccentric mounting 30. In another form, the governor acts on an axially-sliding cam to vary the stroke of the fuel pump, and the piston 34 actuates a cock in the fuel supply to the pump, so as to cut off this supply when the charging-air pressure falls too' low or becomes excessive. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the fuel pump is regulated by a hand lever 40, the movement of which over a segment 43 is restricted by a stop 44 connected to the piston 34. A handle 38 connected to the piston 34 allows hand adjustment of the stop. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the fuel supply may be regulated by a speed regulator on the exhaust-driven turbine, or by the voltage from an electromotor driving the compressor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
