Abstract

388,735. Two-stroke engines. WEIGEL, D. M., 10806, Clifton Boulvard, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. June 19, 1931, No. 17811. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1930. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] Valves; cylinders. -The charge induced at 12 behind the piston 5 is compressed through port 14 into a transfer conduit 24, and towards the end of the instroke of the piston, during which a full-stroke exhaust occurs through port 13, is admitted at 15 to a combustion chamber 16. The ports 12.. 15 are controlled by a sleeve valve 2 which, as the charge is ignited by a spark plug 27 in the combustion chamber, is moved upwards so as to close the port 15 and open ports 171 connecting the combustion chamber to the cylinder. As the sleeve valve returns, it again closes the port 17<1>, but exhaust of the combustion chamber is obtained by a downward movement of the combustion chamber, which thus also acts as a valve. In a Diesel engine, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber. In another form, the combustion chamber is fixed, and its ports are controlled by the sleeve valve and by another short sleeve operating in the top of the chamber. In a further modification, the combustion chamber is placed at the side of the cylinder, its communication with the cylinder being controlled by the sleeve valve, a poppet valve separating it from the transfer conduit. Valve gear.-The sleeve valve 2 is actuated by a cam 22, and the combustion chamber 16 by a cam 23, push-rod 20, and rocker 19. In a modification, the sleeve valve may be actuated by the piston contacting with flanges on the sleeve at the ends of its stroke.
