Valves.-In a four-stroke engine having an auxiliary piston e driven from an overhead half-speed shaft so as to reduce the clearance space to a minimum at the end of the exhaust stroke, the inlet and outlet ports f, g in the cylinder c communicate with passages f<2>, g<2> in the piston e, which are controlled by valves h, i actuated by cams on the overhead shaft. The piston e may form one end of a sleeve which slides between the cylinder and main piston d. According to the Provisional Specification, the auxiliary piston may be moved down by a cam and returned by one or more springs.
