Abstract

349,898. Two- and four-stroke oil engines. LEFORT, G., 31, Avenue des Ecoles, Villejuif, Seine, France. Nov. 22, 1929, No. 35777. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1928. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi).] Liquid fuel is cracked by being injected into a portion of the burnt gas, and combustion air is added later in the cycle. In a two-stroke engine, a valve 4 isolates a portion of the burnt gas in a chamber 1 just before the exhaust port is uncovered by the piston, and liquid fuel, either alone or with air, is injected by a pump through passages 10, 8, 6. During the compression stroke, the valve 4 is lifted once or twice by a cam acting through a rocker 16 and against a spring 15. In a four-stroke-cycle engine, the chamber 1 is omitted, but the valves are timed so that there is an interval, between the closing of the exhaust valve and the opening of the inlet valve, during which the liquid fuel is injected. Ignition may be by spark or compression. The cylinder head may be made of nickel or copper or an alloy of these metals to assist cracking by catalysis. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 2492/05, [Class 7, Air and gas engines].
