Abstract
186,443. Barnes, R. July 6, 1921. Charge, moistening; cylinders, liners, valve chests, and relief valves for; non-compression engines; materials, actuating. - Hydrogen and oxygen stored in two reservoirs pass through simultaneously-controlled valves and pipes 50 into a chamber 45 partly filled with water. The mixture passes through the port 46 and a pipe to the valve-controlled, engine inlet port. The top of the chamber is closed by a spring-held cap 60, and non-return valves 52 are placed in the pipes 50, so that damage from back ignition is prevented. The mixture is ignited by a spark-plug and to prevent formation of a vacuum at the end of the expansion stroke, a non-return relief valve 35<a>, Fig. 3, admits air. The top of the cylinder is grooved as at 36 to act as a drain for any water which may be formed; the groove is deepest at the exhaust outlet, water formed passing out through the exhaust. The cylinder is coated with zinc.
