Abstract

306,527. British Continental Motors, Ltd., (Assignees of Niven, A. M.). Feb. 23, 1928, [Convention date.]. Valves.-In engines having sleeve valves 13 operating in pockets 12 between the cylinder and cylinder head, manually-operated means are provided for periodically producing suction in the pockets to remove sludge therefrom. The pockets 12 are shown connected by passages 18 to a manifold 20, which communicates with the inlet manifold 21 by a pipe fitted with a valve 29 actuated by linkage 26, 28 from the carburetter throttle 123. A lost motion-connection 30, 31 is provided so that the valve 28 is opened only for large openings of the throttle 23, the suction in the inlet manifold then removing the sludge. The valve 29 might be controlled by the carburettor choke and used for starting, or by a manually operated rod of the electric starter. Specification 306,526 is referred to.
