459,804. Engines convertible for use with liquid or gaseous fuel. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES., Unterturkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Sept. 3, 1935, No. 24539. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1934. [Class 7 (ii)] To vary the compression ratio and enable an engine to be operated alternatively with liquid or gaseous fuel exchangeable parts are inserted in and removed from the wall of the combustion space from the outside. The combustion space is closed by a plug when the engine is operated with gaseous fuel and the plug is replaced by a fuel nozzle or nozzle insertion when the engine is operated by liquid fuel. Fig. 1 shows an oil engine having a precombustion chamber b which communicates with the cylinder through a narrow passage e<2> in an insertion e. When the engine is to be operated by wood gas admitted through the valve i, the insertion f carrying the fuel nozzle g and the heating plug i, used at starting are replaced by a plug l, Fig. 2, and a sparking- plug m and the insertion e is removed to leave a relatively wide passage k leading to the cylinder. The insertion f, which is in direct contact with the cooling water, may line only part of the precombustion chamber and may be retained in the head while the fuel nozzle is replaced by a plug.
