The attestation of a preceptory in the city of Bitonto, town of the Terra di Bari located on the first step of the Murgia and crossed by the Via Traiana, dates back to the first half of the fifteenth century when it ownedn a rural and urban land patrimony granted largely in emphyteusis. The aim of this contribution is to illustrate the events of the commandery during the sixteenth century by drawing on unpublished sources preserved in the Archives of the Order of Malta in La Valletta, the Diocesan Archives of Bitonto and the State Archives of Bari. The most of these news concern the economic aspects of the life of the settlement which will also be examined in the light of the information contained in some lists of the preceptories of the Priorato di Barletta regarding incomes and responsiones

— The important role of the Mezzogiorno, within the geography of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, emerges from the Bull Pie postulatio (1113) by which Pope Pasquale II took the Order under his protection, sanctioning its official birth. This contribution aims to investigate the origins of the three hospitaller priories present in Southern built in Barletta, Capua and Messina, with a marked preference for seaside towns. An attempt has been made to reconstruct the role and functions of the prior, essentially an administrative link between the headquarters and the peripheral structures represented by the preceptories, also including a chronotaxis. The comparison with other realities in Western Europe allowed to establish how the birth and subsequent affirmation of the priories in the Norman-Swabian Mezzogiorno was rather early, most likely due to the geographical position of this region, but also to the conspicuous support that the Order received from the kings of Sicily.

In this paper we focus the attention on the commandery of the Order of St. John in Ruvo di Puglia during the 1t5th century, period of transformation and relaunch of the Order, always involved in the fighting Ottoman Turks. The settlement of St. John’s chevaliers in Ruvo dates at the first quarter of the 13th century, but the first documented news about the commandery refers to 1329. A specific attention was given to economic features through the analysis of some unpublished document: a process of improvement of 1572 available at Bitonto Diocesan Archive and a inventory (cabreo) of 1587 available at Malta National Library in La Valletta. The economic conditions of the commandery, unfortunately, were not particulary prosperous, as appears also in the comparison with other similar institutions in the Priorate of Barletta. This feature, during the second half of the 16th century, lead to the union of the settlements of Ruvo, Bitonto and Corato creating a unique larger commandery.

This paper examines the history, the patrimony and the prosopography of the brethren of the Hospitallers in Trani, city on the Adriatic coast where the presence of knights is attested from the second half of the twelfth century onwards. In Trani they had a commandery with the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, to which, after the suppression of the Order of the Temple, was added the former Templar church of San Giovanni Battista. The commandery was suppressed in 1503 and subjected to this of Bari and later directly to the Hospitallers’ prior of Barletta.

Templar settlements in Istria and Dalmatia and relationships with Western Adriatic side
The presence of the Templars in Croatian territory in general, and in the Dalmatian and Istrian ones particularly, is due to the role played by this transit area to the Holy Land, both by sea and by land. Very important were the settlements in the coastal towns, primarily the port of Senj, for connections to the Italian Adriatic cites. Especially favourable to the Templars were the kings of Hungary taking under their protection the Order with the largess of a plurality of donations, not only landed property, but entire fief or cities. For their part, the Templars were always men of confidence of both the Arpad dynasty and the Angevin one. The main Templar centre in Dalmatia was the domus of Vrana, a Benedictine monastery converted into a fortress by knights. Unfortunately, relations with the Templars and the inhabitants of the centres in which they settled and got in fief were not always good, just think of the difficulties encountered in Senj, Klis and Šibenik which forced the Order to abandon these places with heavy economic damage, especially for the loss of Senj that granted considerable revenue for rights of the ships docked in the harbour. After dealing with templar presence in Dalmatia and Istria, the relationships between the two sides of Adriatic sea involving Templars were examined finding three categories. The first kind includes economic and trading relationships or exchanges such as the shipping of wheat from Apulia to Zara, or the shipment of legumes in the province of Hungary, or freighting of Dalmatian ships by Templars in Apulia. The second category concerns relationships between Dalmatian and Istrian templar settlements and the Republic of Venice; while the last one takes in consideration relationships about templar knights’ international mobility changing task in the Order or for diplomatic missions mostly after the rise of the Angevin dynasty, which already ruled in Southern Italy, in the Kingdom of Hungary.

In the early Angevine age Hospitallers had some olive groves; unfortunately, during the 14th century no knowledge is available, only in the first decade of the 15th century the ownership of the church of St. John is documented.

Templars and relationship between the two coasts of Adriatic sea.
During Middle Ages there were constantly exchanges between the two coasts of Adriatic sea concerning several features. In these relationships we have to take in account also those regarding Templar Order’s settlements, which never have been treated in a paper. Templars founded their preceptories on both the coasts of the Gulf of Venice, as was known in Middle Ages the Adriatic sea; those preceptories were in three Provinces: Apulia (Southern Italy), Italia-Lombardia (Northern Italy) on the Italic peninsula and Hungary on the other side. Templar presence in both the shores of Adriatic see was due to the chance of using harbours and roads network which allowed the connection with the Holy Land. This paper will concern the relationships of Templar houses settled in four geographical areas: Apulia, Venice, Istria and Dalmatia. We focus our attention mainly on relations between Apulia and Ungaria Templar Provinces, becoming rather strong when a Angevine branch ascended the throne in Hungarian Kingdom and the main one was on the throne of Naples in the Italian Mezzogiorno. Relationships were of economic, maritime and commercial nature, such as shipping wheat from Apulian ports, but they regarded also Templar brethren belonging from Province of Hungary transiting in Apulian lands and ports, or brothers belonging from Mezzogiorno sent in the Kingdom of Hungary with diplomatic missions on behalf of Angevine dynasty. Other kinds of relationships analyzed were those with the Republic of Venice and its merchants and those with ship-owners of Dalmatian coast.

During the Middle Ages, saffron was one of the most used spices in various fields and enjoyed considerable interest in international trade. Italy was one of the main producers in Europe and cultivation was present in several areas of the peninsula: the finest qualities were produced in Tuscany and Abruzzi, but crococulture was also practiced in Lombardy, Umbria, Marche and Apulia. In the latter region, the second center in the Kingdom of Naples, saffron found space above all in Salento, but it was
also cultivated in Terra di Bari. Although inferior in quality to the Abruzzese zima, the Apulian zima, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, had its place on European markets, being requested by German, Venetian and Florentine merchants. This paper aims to provide an overview about production and trade of the spice in Terra di Bari, a subject that has not been dealt with in historical research, using different sources, such us some German and Venetian trading practices (pratiche mercantili) of

In the mid-1920s, the Kingdom of Italy was a strong importer of wheat; In order to reverse this deficitin the trade balance, the fascist regime decided to implement an agrarian policy aimed at achieving, within a few years, full self-sufficiency. This policy is remembered as the "battle for the wheat", which began in 1925 and was mainly directed by Arrigo Serpieri. The measures were aimed toincrease the yields per hectare of wheat. The factors that had a positive impact were the progressive spread of mechanization in the countryside, the use of chemical fertilizers, the widening of land credit and the use of selected seed. The present work will analyze the effects of the fascist politics in the first period using the data coming from the Catasto Agrario of 1929; the second experience of thiskind after that of 1910. In this case, three case studies (Lombardy, Tuscany and Puglia) will be considered corresponding to three geographical areas of the country (Northern, Central and Southern) and three different forms of land management (high farming, sharecropping and latifundium). After an initial descriptive analysis with provincial data, the focus will be shifted on the yields per hectare by comparing the values of 1929 with the average values of 1923-28 using the data at the municipal level. It will try to understand if there is a link between the yield of wheat and its spread on the territory in the three different forms of conduction and, with different models of linear regression, it will go to identify which explanatory variables had a greater influence on crop productivity levels in different provinces.

Saffron in the Middle Ages was the most precious spice, a luxury good with an important international trade. Italy was the main producer in Europe, together with Spain and, to a lesser extent, France; Italian saffron was among the most valuable and sought-after qualities. In the Peninsula, the cultivation of saffron was practiced in some territorial contexts, including Apulia, the second center in the Kingdom of Naples after the Abruzzi. This contribution will deal with the cultivation and trade of this spice in Terra d’Otranto between the 15th and 16th centuries. The purpose of the paper is to show the importance assumed by saffron in the economy of this province, a periphery at the center of international commercial circuits, a crop often marginalized by historical research, to the advantage of olive growing. Different sources will be used (fiscal, notarial, historical-geographical, commercial) to illustrate the spread of crocus cultivation and its presence on foreign markets thanks to the pres-
ence of foreign merchants, especially Germans. After examining the phenomenon in the province, Casalnuovo in the 16th century was taken into consideration as a case study, for which some notarial deeds were examined from which interesting details emerge. Ultimately, the fiscal aspects of the saffron trade were exposed.

Saffron was among the most sought-after spices between the Middle Ages and the Early modern age due to its multiple uses and was part of luxury consumption until the end of the 16th century, when its decline began caused by the arrival in Europe of new foodstuffs from the Americas which soon supplanted traditional spices as the status symbol of socioeconomic elites. In this contribution attention focuses on the analysis of the price of saffron in Europe between the 13th and 17th centuries through the collection of a discrete quantity of data relating both to the main places of production (Spain, Italy) and to the more important international markets (Germany, Netherlands). In some cases, such as England and Poland, it has been possible to reconstruct historical series large enough to allow the long-term trends to be highlighted. Another aspect examined concerns the costs incurred by the merchants for transferring of the spice from the places of production to the final markets. The work presents a rich statistical appendix with a collection of saffron prices from different sources that could be useful for further and future research.

Apulia, between the late middle ages and the beginning of the modern age, was the second center of saffron production in the Kingdom of Naples, L’Aquila and its surroundings being the main. The Apulian product was of inferior qualitaty, but found its place on international markets. German merchants came to Apulia to obtain supplies, sometimes directly from the producers, but more often at the fairs that took place between November and January. This paper examines the role that fairs played in the marketing of the precious spice, drawing on some German trade practices from the sixteenth century. Particular attention is paid to two fairs administered by the Church of St. Nicholas of Bari, using unpublished archival material.

This study aims to shade light on the effects of land inequality on the growth of human capital in the Italian countryside during the 1930s. The initial hypothesis, according to which land inequality contributed to slowing down the process of schooling, was tested by means of specific spatial regression techniques. The results obtained made it possible to highlight how some specific variables of land inequality significantly influenced the literacy rate in rural Italy

During the Middle Ages saffron was the most expensive spice, a luxury good with a major international trade. Italy was the main producer in Europe, with Spain and France on a smaller scale; Italian saffron was among the finest and most valued varieties and reached marketplaces in Northern Europe and Eastern Mediterranean. In the Italian Peninsula saffron was cultivated in geographical areas such as Tuscany and Abruzzo, which excelled in quality and quantity; the spice was to be found in other regions, notably Marche, Umbria, Lombardy, and Apulia. In Apulia saffron grew especially in Terra d’Otranto, even if the product was of lower quality and quantity compared to that of Tuscany and Abruzzo, but it was imported by several towns in Istria, Dalmatia, Albania, and Greece. In some notarial deeds of the second half of the 15th century saffron plantation was reported in Bitonto. In this paper saffron plantation and trade are dealt with, referring to Apulia and Bitonto.

The matricula maioris ecclesie Rubensis is a fourteenth-century obituary used by the Chapter of the Cathedral of Ruvo di Puglia until the seventeenth century. The medieval part of the parchment codex was published a few years ago and it is an interesting and unexplored source to reconstruct aspects of the economic and social history of Ruvo between XII and XIV centuries, period which may be covered by donations made by the deceased to be remembered in the obituary. The analysis of donations allows to draw a fairly interesting picture on the social classes and the professions exercised in the city, with special reference to the craft world, and the rural landscape that characterized the countryside of Ruvo in the Middle Ages, field, the latter, in which Authors never were interested in due to the lack of documentary sources.

Jewish presence in Bitonto during the 15th century: knowledge from registers of notary Angelo Benedetto di Bitritto (1458-1486)
The existence of a Jewish settlement in Bitonto dates to the last twenty years of the 13th century; during the second half of the 15th century Jews had the period of greater splendor as in the whole Italian Mezzogiorno. Registers of notary deeds are a helpful source to retrace the history of the Jewish community; in past decades some scholars (Carabellese at the beginning of the 20th century, Colafemmina, Maiorano recently) published several deeds or their summaries concerning some notaries operating in Bitonto in late Middle Ages. In this paper we wish to supply more information about Jews in Aragonese age using registers of the notary Angelo Benedetto di Bitritto the most of them are still unpublished (Colafemmina published only about 10 deeds in his contributes). There are 256 deeds affecting Jews living in Bitonto from 1458 to 1486, even if they do not cover continuously the whole span; knowledge from these deeds has been completed with other published sources. Deeds regards especially business, so the main subject we deal in this contribute is the analysis of Jews’ economic activities: they were involved often in trade (clothes, olive oil, cattle, spice and soap), but also in lending money, some of them were craftsmen; they used to employ financial resources in real estate business buying or selling houses. We focus on two influential Jewish dynasties, Russellus and Mayr, whose members had in several times important roles in the political and administrative life of the Giudecca. We try to reconstruct kinship connections in lineage and describing events regarding the members of the two families involved in social and economic life.

In last decades scholars focused attention in measurement of inequalities in income and wealth distribution during the pre-industrial age, for instance the EINITE (Economic Inequality across Italy and Europe, 1300-1800) project. Some recent papers showed that in Southern continental Italy the first data concerning inequality of wealth distribution in pre-industrial age dated back only to the 16th century, while in other geographical areas (Tuscany, Piedmont) information are available since the 14th century originated from fiscal survey. Unfortunately, in the Kingdom of Naples this kind of source is rather uncommon during late Middle Age, impeding the investigation of economic inequalities in this influential historic period prelude of the early Modern age. In this contribute, taking care of this lack, an innovative approach to estimate measures of inequality in wealth distribution based on obituaries in two centers in the Northern Terra di Bari (Ruvo di Puglia and Giovinazzo) is introduced. Obituaries (necrologies) are registers in which names of deceased benefactors and their charitable contributions in favor of religious institutions with the aim of receiving prayers were recorded. In the two case studies the most of donations are in money, but there are also contributions in lands or dwellings, concerning the first half of the 14th century. Investigating data shows that charitable contributions are correlated to the benefactors’ socio-economic role, observing higher mean values in wealthy classes (nobles, clergy) and lower in other classes; therefore, it is allowed to suppose oblations were related to the benefactor’s economic ability. Money contributions can be a suitable proxy variable of inhabitants’ wealth of the two centers and using this data allows to fit estimates of inequality measures. It is more appropriate to link the value of oblations to wealth, instead of income, as in a society essentially of agrarian type, like to that of the two centers in the historical period in examination, the existence of a relationship of proportionality is more plausible between the two variables. Another circumstance leading to consider monetary donations of benefactors as a proxy variable of wealth is that, in addition to money oblations, there were also some in nature, in several times lands or houses, manifestation of donors’ real estate rather than of income. A further encouragement comes from statistical analysis: Pareto’s function fits very well the distribution of contribution in money and this theoretical model usually describes the wealth distribution. As term of comparison, the closest geographically and chronologically, data concerning the inequality measure deduced by an apprezzo (fiscal document) of 1417 compiled in the town of Molfetta neighboring with Giovinazzo, and for several features very similar, being also distant only 15 km from Ruvo di Puglia, is used. Other comparisons will take place with some centers of Tuscany and Piedmont in the same historical period.

The existence of a Jewish settlement in Bitonto dates to the last twenty years of the 13 th century. During the second half of the 15 th century, Jews there had their period of greatest splendour as in the whole Italian Mezzogiorno . Registers of notary deeds are an helpful source to retrace the history of the Jewish community. In past decades, some scholars (Carabellese at the beginning of the 20 th century, Colafemmina and Maiorano more recently) published deeds or their summaries concerning some notaries operating in Bitonto. In this paper, more information is provided on Jews in the Aragonese age using the registers of the notary Angelo Benedetto di Bitritto, most of which are still unpublished (Colafemmina has only published about 10 deeds). There are 256 deeds affecting Jews living in Bitonto from 1458 to 1486, even if they do not cover continuously the whole span; the information from these deeds has been completed with other published sources. The deeds regard especially...

In this study, land inequality in Italy during fascism was observed and reconstructed in order to offer new elements of analysis related to the study of inequality in the Italian countryside during the first half of the twentieth century. Using provincial data of the 1930 Agricultural Census, five indicators of land inequality were constructed. Initially, a univariate analysis was carried out, taking the indicators individually; subsequently, using a multivariate approach, three synthetic indicators were produced. Finally, the provinces were divided into homogeneous clusters based on the concentration of land ownership. A notable useful tool for analysis was mapping using GIS software.
