Nel 1345 la città dalmata di Zara si ribellò al dominio veneziano estromettendone il presidio di guardia, ma si dovette arrendere nuovamente a Venezia dopo un assedio durato 16 mesi. Gli eventi sono conosciuti fin nei particolari perché oggetto di due diverse cronache, la Obsidio Jadrensis, composta da un anonimo, evidentemente fautore dell’aristocrazia zaratina e a essa appartenente, nonché testimone oculare dei fatti; la Cronica Jadretina, composta da un anonimo di parte avversa, un veneziano, deciso assertore dei valori morali e civili della Dominante. Il contributo esamina i due testi, esaminandone la tradizione (per entrambe limitata a pochissimi manoscritti) e il diverso carattere ideologico e stilistico.

This article focuses on some questions concerning the complex phenomenon of the perpetuation of early modern military activities through a case study of the presence of the capi da guerra, foreign military commanders in the Venetian service during the War of Crete situated in its Province of Dalmatia and Albania. The fact alone that more than half of the capi da guerra engaged in the War of Crete were actually veterans from the Thirty Years’ War, many of them situated in Dalmatia, shows the significance of their impact on the Venetian army. These military entrepreneurs, the main actors in the exchange of military knowledge, combined with the growing internationalization of European armies of the time, both reflect and produce the dynamic exchange and adaptations of military innovations that affected the whole continent, including such borderland areas as the coast of the eastern Adriatic.

Religion, cult and morality in Salona (I) Respect and duty towards the deities

This article is the first part of the Religion, cult and morality in Salona series. The aim of the series is to investigate what moral beliefs and values were present in religious and cult communities of the ancient Mediterranean, during the period from the beginning of the Roman Principate (1st century) until the development of the cult of martyrs and Christianity in Salona (4-5th century). This goal is fulfilled by implementing the theoretical and methodological principles of both philosophy and historiography. The philosophical side of the inquiry helps us understand what the moral beliefs and values are in the first place. The historiographical side of the inquiry helps us reach the material and literary evidence about the religious and cult communities; religious beliefs, cult objects and practices. The historiographical investigation brings forth the data which is fundamental for our embodiment of the facts about the phenomena which was developed in the past. By implementing the various disciplines (archaeology, epigraphy, classical studies, and so on), it is possible to collect the knowledge regarding the state of affairs, and beliefs and values in the past. In this way, historiographical research provides the theoretical system made of
facts about the state of affairs and the facts about beliefs and values in the antiquity.

U radu se donose podaci o položaju prvotne župne crkve Svih Svetih u Podgori. Također, obrađena je figuralna arhitektonska dekoracija za koju se temeljem arhivskih podataka, te stilske i strukturalne analize pretpostavlja da joj je pripadala. Komparativnom, stilskom i morfološkom analizom figuralne dekoracije dokazuje se da je djelo istoga majstora, odnosno domaće klesarske radionice djelatne u 17. stoljeću. Predaja prema kojoj su Turci uništili dvije crkve Svih Svetih u Podgori razmatra se kroz teorijsko-metodološki okvir ''Drugosti'', te se odbacuje kao neutemeljena i kontradiktorna postojećim arhivskim podacima.

U radu se analiziraju nadgrobni spomenici od 17.-19. stoljeća na groblju Sv. Tekle u Podgori. Grobnice su podijeljene prema različitim identitetskim odrednicama kao što su dob, plemenska pripadnost, pripadnost lokalnoj zajednici, pripadnost udruženju, vjerskoj skupini i sl. Tako su primjerice u 19. stoljeću dječje grobnice bile odvojene od odraslih, dok su one za odrasle bile podijeljene na plemenske/obiteljske i grobnice za strance. Identitetsko određenje kod pokapanja jasno se očituje i kod svećeničkih grobnica gdje se pokapaju samo osobe istog spola i poziva, ali i kod bratimskih grobnica namijenjenih pokapanju osoba i članova njihovih obitelji koje su tijekom života pripadali nekoj od bratovština. Ipak, treba reći da su pogrebne prakse bile fluidne, a ne fiksne, te da unatoč jasnim identitetskim podjelama postoje iznimke kod pokapanja.

U radu se razlažu najzanimljiviji povijesni i pravni monumenti grada Omiša iz razvijenog srednjeg vijeka. Potom se nakon eskplikacije ugovora s Mletačkom Republikom iz 1444., a uoči već novog vijeka, razlažu izvori vezani za pravni i društveni život Omiša i Venecije s jedne strane te Poljica, Osmanlija i drugih susjednih krajeva s druge strane. Nakon interpretacije Omiškog statuta spominju se najstarije sačuvane kaznene parnice za doba mletačke vladavine u Omišu, a neposredno po donošenju statuta koji je formalno samo djelomično sačuvan.The paper discusses the most interesting historical and legal monuments of the town of Omiš from the High Middle Ages. Among the musicians of Czech origin  who worked along the Adriatic coast before the First World War, bandmasters of military and civil brass bands made a significant contribution. Their work contributed to the development of the still-living tradition of brass music, which is still an important common cultural heritage of Central European countries. However, in the millennial culture of Dalmatia and Littoral Croatia it is only one of many cultural layers. The Austrian (Austro-Bohemian) type of brass instruments and bands came from the military and naval music environment, but were gradually adopted by the emerging civic society. Along the Adriatic coast, this is reminiscent of the relatively short period
of the Austrian government (1815–1918), when traditional relations with Venice were broken and cultural influences from the interior predominated. At the same time, cultural contacts between the Slavic peoples of Austria-Hungary developed at an unprecedented rate.

This is the second part of the article that covers the history of Dalmatian island of Hvar during the World War II, in the period between the proclamation of Independent State of Croatia in April 1941 and capitulation of Kingdom of Italy in September 1943. The article presents the situation at the island during that period and activities of all political-military subjects that were present at the island – the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia, as well as the Communist led People's Liberation Movement and the Italian army.

Tema ovog seminarskog rada je teritorijalni razvoj Poljica i njihov odnos sa Splitom kroz okvire političke, geografske, gospodarske i kulturne povijesti, koristeći se suvremenom znanstvenom i stručnom literaturom, uspoređujući različita stajališta i argumentacije iz hrvatske historiografije o interpretacijama narodnih legendi o postanku Poljica i povoda poljičko-splitskih sukoba kroz srednji vijek.
U prvom dijelu rada proučava se nastanak Poljica; kako su geografska obilježja njenog teritorija utjecala na najraniji razvoj, promatrajući povijesni i gospodarski razvoj Poljica od zimske ispaše ilirskih plemena, istočnog dijela salonitanskog agera, do dolaska Hrvata i formiranja Poljica, osamostaljenja i kasnijeg ustrojstva, kao i analizu narodnih legendi koje prate i ukazuju na pojedinosti nastanka i razvoja Poljičke župe. Drugi dio rada proučavaodnose između PoljicaiSplita; etničke i kulturološke razloge, pretenzije Splitske komune kao nasljednice rimske Salone nad teritorijem Poljica, utjecaj Splitske nadbiskupije i razdor između glagoljaškog i latinskog svećenstva, te kako su gospodarske i političke prilike kroz hrvatsko srednjovjekovlje utjecale na njihov odnos.

Poljica i Poljička župa, nazivana i kneževinom ili republikom, se odnosi na autonomnu seljačku republiku, od izvorno trinaest seoskih zajednica unutar područja oko planine Mosor, ograničeno rijekom Žrnovnicom na zapadu, rijekom Cetinom na sjeveroistoku i Jadranskim morem na jugu. Ilirski i predilirski stočari, koji su obitavali na velikim kršnim poljima u Dalmaciji i današnjoj Hercegovini, su preko zime migrirali na okolna planinska područja zbog potrebe zimske ispaše, te tako dolazi do prvog naseljavanja područja Poljica. Geomorfološka obilježja teritorija Poljica, odnosno njena unutarnja podjela u tri mikroregije; Gornja, Donja i Srednja Poljica, su omogućavala cjelogodišnji boravak transhumantnim stočarima, što je utjecalo i tome da stočarstvo ostane kao glavna gospodarska djelatnost na tom području i u kasnijim razdobljima.
Za vrijeme Avarsko-Slavenske provale nestaje rimski grad Salona koji je u svome ageru uključivao zapadni dio Poljica; njihovi novi stanovnici su bili organizirani u plemensko-rodovske zajednice iz kojih će kasnije niknuti tzv. pučki kotari. Za vrijeme rane Hrvatske države, ti kotari su činili dio teritorija unutar Kliške župe. Sklapanjem personalne unije između Ugarskog i Hrvatskog Kraljevstva, teritoriji južno od Gvozda se postepeno partikuliraju i političko-upravne zajednice se osamostavljuju, te dolazi do ujedinjenja i formiranja Poljica kao autonomne Poljičke župe i seoske republike. Poljička župa je zadržala glagoljašku pismenost, i tradicionalno slavensko pravo i demokratsko uređenje, koje se u 13. st. kodificira u Poljički statut.
Stanovništvo iz razrušene Salone osniva novi grad unutar zidova Dioklecijanove palače, grad Split, koji s tokom svog razvoja neizbježno, zbog pitanja prava nasljedstva Salonitanskog agera i gospodarskih potreba razvoja granica, ulazi u sukob sa susjednom Poljičkom župom. Splitsko-Poljički odnosi su ovisili o političkim okolnostima istočnojadranske regije, kao i o zajedničkim vladarima. Poljica su podržavala lokalne hrvatske dinastije i u sukobima sa ugarskim kraljem ulaze i u sukob s njemu lojalnim dalmatinskim gradovima, što uključuje i grad Split. Splitsko-Poljički sukobi su ipak bili pretežito gospodarski temeljeni, s korijenom problema u potrebi za pašnjacima i ispašom stoke.



Poljica (tal. Poglizza) and the Poljica zhupa, also namedPoljica duchy or republic, refers to an autonomous peasant republic, originally of thirteen rural communities within the area around the mountain of Mosor in Middle Dalmatia, bounded by the river Žrnovnica in the west, the river Cetina in the northeast and the Adriatic Sea in the south.
Illyrian and pre-Illyrian cattle herders, who lived on large karst fields in Dalmatia and today's Herzegovina, migrated over the winter to the surrounding mountain areas due to the need for winter grazing, and with that comes to the first settlement of Poljica. The Geomorphological features of the territory of Poljica, ie. its internal division into three micro-regions; Upper, Lower and Middle Poljica enabled these transhumant cattle herders to stay all year round, without the need to migrate into another area, which also influenced livestock farming and animal husbandry to remain the main economic activity in the area in later periods.
During the Avar-Slavic invasion, the Roman city of Salona, which included the western part of Poljica in its ager, was destroyed; the new inhabitants of Poljica were organized into tribal, clan-like communities from which the so-called pučki kotari, or popular districts arrise. During the early Croatian state, these districts were part of the the Klis zhupa. With the Kingdom of Croatia entering a personal union with the Kingdom of Hungary, the territories south of the mountain Gvozd gradually became partitioned, and political-administrative communities became independent. Poljica was united and formed as an autonomous zhupa and peasant republic. Poljica retained the Glagolitic church literacy, and the traditional Slavic law and democratic order, which in the 13th century was codified in the Poljica Statute.
The population of the ruined Salona founded a new city within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, the city of Split, which inevitably came into conflict with the neighboring parish of Poljica due to the issue of the Salonitan ager's inheritance rights and the economic needs of border development. Split-Poljica relations were largely dependent on the political circumstances of the Eastern Adriatic region, as well as on them sharing the same rulers. Poljica supported the local Croatian dynasties in their conflict with the Hungarian kings, and with that Poljica also entered into a conflict with the Dalmatian cities loyal to him, includes the city of Split. The Split-Poljica conflicts, however, were predominantly economically based, with the root of the problem being the evergrowing need for pastures and cattle.

Rodoslovlje je trag jednog roda u povijesti jednog naroda i kraja. Ovdje je izneseno
rodoslovlje roda Katavić s kratkim pregledom povijesti kako samog roda, tako i navedenog
njihovog zavičaja. Došavši iz Bosne i Hercegovine u novi kraj početkom XVIII stoljeća
Katavići su pustili svoje korjenje u kamenito tlo novog zavičaja. Od tada, prkoseći svim
teškoćama, očuvali su se do naših dana. Danas ih gotovo nema u Prološcu, premda se sinovi i
kćeri ovog roda rado vraćaju u prigodama kao što su svetkovine ili obiteljska druženja.
Proložac je kroz čitavo razdoblje prisutnosti Osmanlija u ovim krajevima bio vrlo
nemirno područje pogođeno mnogim ratovima, migracijama, prirodnim nepogodama i sličnim
nemirima. Velik broj rodova zbog tih je razloga u više navrata selilo i zauvijek napustilo rodni
kraj. Na njihovo mjesto dolazili su novi rodovi. Neki su s novim promjenama ponovno
odlazili dalje, a neki su ostajali na novom ognjištu. Takav primjer daje nam rod Katavić.

DR DUJE RENDIĆ-MIOČEVIĆ, THE FIRST MAYOR OF SPLIT WHO WAS
MEMBER OF PEOPLE’S PARTY

The most significant event in the history of Dalmatia and Split in the second half of the nineteenth century was the victory of the People’s Party at the elections that were held in June 1882. The victory itself resulted in the appointment of the new patriotic officials in the Municipality and marked the end of lingering conflicts with the members of the previously ruling Autonomist Party. The Autonomists, led by Antonio Bajamonti, who was also the mayor of the city, had been previously accused of incompentence and corruption. Therefore, a new mayor was elected at the session of the Municipal Council on 28th October 1882. The new mayor, Duje Rendić-Miočević, who was a lawyer by profession, was also, at the time, a representative in both the Diet of Dalmatia in Zadar and the Imperial Council in Vienna. In addition, six new municipal assessors were appointed: Gajo Bulat, then a leading figure in the People’s Party, was one of them. The election results echoed throughout Dalmatia and Croatia. They represented the final achievement of long-standing patriotic goals, such as the
introduction of Croatian as the official language of the authorities and the unification of thenorthern and southern parts of Croatia. Duje Rendić-Miočević was born in Split on 4th November 1834, where he also died in 1915. He graduated law from University in Padua. There, he also obtained a PhD degree. In the mid-1860s, he started a law practice in Sinj. Several months later, he moved his office to Split. There he became more politically active in the People’s Party, although, according to several different resources, he himself did not harbour any political ambitions. That became apparent when he resigned from the mayoral office, that he held in the period 1882 – 1885, on account of disagreement with the leader of the party, Gajo Bulat. Althugh he did not want to run for representative in the Imperial Council, he remained active in the Diet of Dalmatia until 1889. Then he retired from public and political life and restarted his law practice in Sinj. A number of papers and newspaper articles have been written about Duje Rendić-Miočević’s accomplishments. Although they have been perceived in a positive light, their detailed analysis has revealed inaccuracies. The author of this paper, therefore, addresses the inaccuracies by providing a review of comments and perceptions that have been made about Duje Rendić-Miočević’s achievements by both renowned historians and journalists. In this way, the author intends to reveal that Miočević’s achievements are far more significant than it has been so far addressed. The final part of the paper discusses the Miočević family valuables, such as the mayor’s portrait by Faustina Vecchietti and a programme of concert that was held in front of the mayor’s ancestral house in the small piazza named Mihovilova poljana, on the day of his inauguration.

the integration of the town of Sinj into the Venetian heritage across the Adriatic Sea. As the State Archives of Venice (Archivio di Stato di Venezia) contains valuable archival fonds dealing with the history of the Eastern Adriatic from the 15th to the 18thcentury the research of its authentic materials is required for the study of developmental stages of Sinj and the Cetinska krajina after the Ottoman’s rule. The researches of the past several years have resulted in finding several complete series or individual documents referring to the history of the region of Sinj at the end of 18th century. The fond Inquisitori sopra l’amministrazione dei pubblici ruoli contains documents of the State Court which regulated military service and recruitment of people primarily on the Eastern Adriatic Sea coast among whom people from Sinj and the Cetinska krajina had a significant role. Furtherly, for the study of the military operations in that region during the Second Morean War (1714-18) the important fonds are Senato Mar and Senato Rettori and valuable complete collections Capi del Consiglio dei Dieci relating to the aftermath of the war. The contents of the fonds Lettere Rettoriai Capi i Camerlengo del Consiglio dei Dieci reveal particularities of social, administrative and economic life of the region of Sinj at the end of 18th century. A brief overview of the aforementioned archival fonds with the special focus on the fond Senato, Dispacci: Provveditori da Terra e da Mar e alter cariche is presented in this article. The fond contains letters and reports of the Venetian officials in overseas dominions which were being sent to the central state administration. The most important reports for the history of Sinj are those being sent during war time 1714-18. The most of the archival material dated August, 1715 refers to time before, during and after the siege of Sinj. The letters that were sent by Angelo Emo, a general Providur for Dalmatia, from the battlefield of Sinj (Campo di Sign) present a significant documentation about the battle of Sinj and related circumstances and events throughout the last Ottoman-Venetian War. The aforementioned archival materials clarify and document key events in the defense of strategically important Dalmatian towns at the beginning of the 18th century.

THE ROLE OF THE KINGDOM OF SERBIA IN THE ASSASSINATION
IN SARAJEVO AND THE OUTBURST OF WORLD WAR ONE

In this paper, the author tackles the issue o f the role o f the Kingdom o f Serbiain the assassination in Sarajevo and the outburst of World War One, this issue still being a rather pressing matter. The author primarily examined the Belgrade intelligence web in Bosnia and Herzegovina, into which threads of the government in Belgrade, its organisation “National Defence“, as well as organisations that were not under its direct control - the “Black Hand“ and “Young Bosnia“ - were interwoven. It is characteristic for all of them that they feared the incomplete
and controversial reform ideas of Franz Ferdinand, Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, whereby trialism provoked the most aversion and fear; in the words of Geoffrey Wawaro, the Serbian party saw this as the creation of the “Great Croatia, Roman-Catholic super-state“. This would have not only put a stop to the realization o f the Greater Serbia, but also, for a longer term, initiated the process of the absorption of Serbia in the reconstructed Habsburg Monarchy. After the assassination in Sarajevo, the government in Belgrade did not have much choice. Pasic neither could nor wanted to conduct a thorough investigation as demanded by the government in Vienna. Since he dreaded Apis and the “Black
Hand“, and since this would have disclosed the Belgrade intelligence web, the only thing that remained was the cover-up tactics. Thus, the level of liability of the Kingdom of Serbia for the assassination in Sarajevo and the outburst of World War One reflects itself first and foremost in creating a terrorist intelligence web and covering up the co-liability for European crisis, which exploded following the assassination in Sarajevo.

Autor se u članku bavi ulogom Kraljevine Srbije u Sarajevskom atentatu i izbijanju Prvog
svjetskog rata istražujući beogradsku obavještajnu m režu u Bosni i Hercegovini u koju su bili upleteni
konci beogradske vlade, vladine organizacije „Narodna odbrana“, organizacije kao „Crna ruka“, ali i
organizacije „Mlada Bosna“, na koje su odlučno utjecali kontroverzni i nedovršeni reformski p lanovi
austrougarskog prijestolonasljednika Franje Ferdinanda. U zaključku, autor ističe da se „razina
odgovornosti“ Kraljevine Srbije ponajprije ogleda u sustavnom političkom zataškavanju svog udjela
odgovornosti za Sarajevski atentat i europskoj političkoj krizi koja je uslijedila.
