He has published articles and essays in several international journals, edited the book “Tales of Unfulfilled Times” (Venezia, Edizioni Ca’ Foscari, 2017), and co-edited the book “Bob Dylan and the Arts: Songs, Film, Painting, and Sculpture in Dylan’s Universe” (Roma, Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura, 2020). His current research studies the work and teachings of artist Norman Raeben and his influence on various leading artists as a case to examine the evolution of Yiddish culture and art in New York in the 20th century. As a multi-instrumentalist and a songwriter, together with the band Le Ombre di Rosso, he has published the albums “Momenti di lucidità” (2016) and “Da Sponda a Sponda” (2021), which puts to music Luciano Cecchinel’s homonymous collection of poems, which was awarded the 2020 Viareggio Prize for Poetry.edit

In a 1991 interview, Dylan describes the trilogy composed of "Blood on the Tracks", "Desire" and "Street Legal" as follows, «that was my painting period [...] that’s like taking a brush and painting those songs onto a canvas». This composing technique owes much to the lessons of artist Norman Raeben and involves the problem of time representation: according to the teacher, in fact, «art must telescope time» or, in Dylan’s words, «have a no time quality». Based on the study of unpublished materials from Raeben’s lesson and the manuscripts of the album Blood On the Tracks held at the Bob Dylan Archive in Tulsa, a research activity conducted as part of the Marie Curie project POYESIS, the article aims to provide a framing of Raeben’s theories on time, highlighting the links to Bergson’s philosophy. The second section of the article analyzes the ways and strategies by which Dylan assimilated and translated their content into the field of songwriting.

In the rich and ever-expanding body of studies on literature and migration, little space has been dedicated to returning migrants. Since the beginning of the 20th century, such a theme has become crucial in our contemporary globalized world. The present essay examines this theme in Italian-American literature, assuming Luciano Cecchinel’s poetical experience as a case study. The poet’s ties with American culture stem from the history of his maternal ancestors, who came to the US during the years of the Great Emigration. After long peregrinations, they settled in Cambridge, Ohio, where their closest relatives joined them. During the Great Depression, economic difficulties forced his grandparents to return to Italy with their little daughter Annie, leaving the rest of the family behind, never to see them again.Annie, the poet’s mother, strongly resented returning to Italy and leaving an America that she considered her homeland. She even initially refused to learn the Italian language. Having become a mother herself, Annie decided to teach her son English, her first language. As a result of this “family odyssey,” Cecchinel has developed what Du Bois would call a double consciousness. So much so that Folco Portinari wonders whether the author is “an American poet who writes in Italian or an Italian poet who translates well from English.” These traits emerge in the collections of poems dedicated to his family diaspora, Lungo la traccia(2005) and Da sponda a sponda(2019), winner of the 2020 Viareggio Poetry Prize. Cecchinel’s poetry gives voice to the experiences of generations of returning migrants.Based on interviews with the author, the article aims to explore his poetic journey with the twofold objective of analyzing the thematic and formal peculiarities of these collections, as well as providing new critical insights into the theme of return migration.

Not unlike the much more famous ‘Jewish heretic hermeneutics’ studied by Susan Handelman, such as those of Freud, Derrida, Bloom and others, painter and philosopher Norman Raeben has formulated his own new method for artistic creation embedded in rabbinic hermeneutics. We hereby present a comprehensive – although introductory – analysis of his creative as well as teaching methods. We also briefly focus on his influence on the poetics of his former student Bob Dylan, offering some preliminary clues for a better comprehension of the interrelations between the creative processes and theories of both authors.
