Leading academics including Elliot Wolfson, James Diamond, Aubrey Glazer, Jonathan Karp, Frances Di Lauro, Samuel Zinner, Daniel Mackay, as well as music and cultural scholars Seth Rogovoy, Robert Sean Wilson, and rabbinic Dylanologists Rabbi David Zaslow, Rabbi Jonathan Seidel and Rabbi Joshua Rose will gather via Zoom on Sunday, March 14, 2021 for an all-day virtual conference on “Bob Dylan: Jewish Perspectives on His Repertoire – Themes of Prophecy and Redemption”.

The 7-hour intensive organized by the Oregon Jewish Culture Project features panel discussions and keynote addresses with such topics as “Foot of Pride: Themes of (False) Prophecy and Redemption” and “Talkin’ Hava Negeilah Blues: A Jewish Experience of Bob Dylan”, as well as “Darkness at the Break of Noon: Dylan's Apocalyptic Vision through a Kabbalistic Prism” and more.

The essay first utilizes the hermeneutics of suspicion and retrieval in order to examine ancient Hebrew prophecy, with an eye toward eliminating the potentially repressive elements of this ancient tradition, and toward reclaiming those elements that contribute to the postmodern project of defending otherness, and fostering transformation. With this reclaimed prophecy in hand, then, the essay explores the songs, performance style, and life of Bob Dylan as an example of a distinctly postmodern prophecy, i.e., prophecy that remains in continuity with ancient prophecy, and yet is distinctly postmodern.

The scope and magnitude of the knowledge of Judaism that Dylan received as a child in Hibbing is debatable, but what is incontestable is that his lifelong quest for matters of the spirit was inspired by the priestly predilection to distinguish sharply between transgression and pious devotion, the prophetic sensibility to demand social justice, and the rabbinic propensity to resist systematic totalization in favor of interrogating issues incessantly-to answer a question with another question-and propagating multiple interpretive perspectives. One can safely assume that Dylan's advocacy for the downtrodden and his restless search for integrity in a world of guile-searching for a gem in this age of fiberglass 1-were shaped, in part, by these dimensions of the Jewish tradition. Even the occasional refusal to undertake his mission-"It's never been my duty to remake the world at large/ Nor is it my intention to sound the battle charge" 2-is reminiscent of the reaction of a number of prophets who reluctantly accepted their calling.

Johnny and Nora sat three feet apart from each other on the grass by an oak with a trunk so wide that Johnny thought it looked like it was about to burst, its branches and leaves so spread out that they seemed to be showing off. The couple had found this small, circular park while walking around Newport the night before. They were in town to be part of the folk festival.  Now, in daylight, Johnny noticed how perfectly mown the turf was, as he watched girls in flower print dresses wandering around the perimeter while others had settled on the grass, talking in circles.

“There’s Donovan and the girl who he slept with last night,” Nora said, pointing with her chin. It was the first thing out of her mouth since they spread out the beach towel and parked themselves on the lawn. Johnny turned and noticed a girl leaning against the trunk of a tree near theirs. She wore a peasant dress. Light brown hair and freckles around her deep-set, brown eyes made her look mysteriously attractive.

The musician next to the girl was Donovan, Johnny figured. He looked like him—long, straight hair and full lips—and there was a black guitar case by his side. Johnny watched him yawn. It was odd that Nora had mentioned the thing about the girl. They hadn’t been out of one another’s sight since they arrived. Maybe he was better off not knowing. Otherwise, it could make him not like Nora the way he wanted to.

As the sun set the night before, Johnny and Nora had stood by the dock and watched the harbor. Johnny noticed how the boats fidgeted in the water as though they were waiting for someone who would never show up. When the dusk had given way to night, Nora pointed to a guesthouse. They walked in and paid for a musty room. The bed was creaky (not that they did anything). Nora wore pajamas, and Johnny fell asleep in his clothes. It had been a long ride.

In this interview, we talk with one of the organizers of the conference "Masked and Anonymous: The Many Faces of Bob Dylan", Fabio Fantuzzi, about both the event and his own research into Dylan’s work with his one-time painting teacher, Norman Raeben.
