The notion of a "bioethical mentality" is put forward, as well as the need for "translational humanities" when dealing with the different environments in which psychiatric ethics is applied

The new CIOMS International Ethical Guidelines on Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects were published in August 2002. The aim of the present paper was to prepare a reasoned Italian translation of the guidelines. A preliminary version was submitted to a group of bioethicists and scientific research experts. Besides verifying the correctness and the adherence of the Italian version to the original text, a number of problematic terms were analysed. Some uncertainties emerged about the translation of expressions such as "ethical review committee" and "sponsor" and the difficulty to distinguish between "should" and "must". In the present globalisation era the need was apparent for a new approach to produce faithful translations based on a multidisciplinary approach that takes into account specific contexts and local peculiarities, but remains respectful to the original text.

After discussing the scope and implications of the expression “mental health” at both the individual and social levels, this paper emphasizes that suffering (a pathic condition) is not always pathological in medical terms, and should be taken into consideration when evaluating the responses to the syndemic (the synergistic outcome of many alterations of the social milieu) caused by Covid19. Against the background of the historical-anthropological dimensions of experience and expectation of societies, the dialogical underpinning of bioethical thinking is rephrased as a psychoethics that incorporates an evaluation of the responses affecting the public, the communicators, and authorities. This reinforces the need for an empirical situationism in moral deliberation and the demand for empirical axiology in which judgments are made after continuous contrasting values, principles, and norms with the actual behavior of people.

In broad terms, life can be characterized as the subject matter of a variety of scientific disciplines. It can also be understood as a feature unique to certain classes of beings deserving respect and care. These two streams of meaning, the scientific and the moral, are integrated in the bioethical imperative. As a matter of fact, what differentiates bioethics from traditional ethics is precisely its integration between these two discourses in what we have called “hybrid epistemic culture”. That means that bioethics is by definition a form of ethics anchored in and respectful of scientific discourses, and not a pure philosophical speculation as well as not pure data analysis or empirical fact.
