DESIGNFOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,945, dated June 10, 1902.
Application filed May 5,1902. Serial'llo. 106,103. Term of patent 14 years.
To aZZ whom, it iii/coy concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD EVERARD, a subject of the King of England, residing at Bristol, in the county of Gloucester, England,
5 have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new and original design for a font of printing-type,
which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A leading characteristic of the design is the peculiar terminals provided for the various lines forming the several letters. These terminals are curved longitudinally instead of being straight, horizontal, or perpendicular lines.
Distinguishing features of several of the .letters and characters composing the font will 0 be particularly described herein.
The terminals at the lower end of the inclined side lines of the letter A are curved upwardly slightly from end to end.
The upper line of the letter B is a curved 5 line, and both the upper and lower lines of said letter project to the left of and are deflected downwardly from the perpendicular line of said letter. The lower line of this letter has also a slight curve.
0 The terminals of the letter O are curvedin opposite directions and both extend beyond opposite sides of the main line.
The upper and lower lines of the letter D are similar to the corresponding lines of the 5 letter B, and the free ends or terminals of said lines are deflected downwardly from the perpendicularline beyond which they project.
The left-hand end of the upper line of the letter E projects beyond the perpendicular 0 line of said letter, and said upper line is curved downwardly from said perpendicular toward the right. The intermediate laterally-projecting line of said letter is not hori zontal, but has a slight curve and is enlarged 5 or increased in width at its free end, and the lower or base line of this letter gradually increases in thickness from the perpendicular toward its right-hand free end.
The laterally-projecting lines of the letter 0 F are similar to the corresponding lines of letr E, above described, and the perpendicuar line of this letter has a curved foot or base similar in form to the lower terminals of the letter A. 5 The terminals of the perpendicular lines of the letters 'H, I, J, and K are similar to those above described in connection with the letters A and F. The line connecting the perpendiculars of the letterH is curved upwardly instead of being horizontal.
The right-hand terminal of the lower line of the letter L is curved upwardly and slightly toward the left from the right-liand end of the base-line of said letter.
The perpendicular lines of the letters M, N,
P, T, and U and inclined lines of'the letters V, W, X, and Y are all provided with the curved terminals before described and which constitute a generic feature of the design.
The line forming the letter S is reduced in thickness toward both ends, and the lower left-hand terminal of said line is larger than the upper right-hand terminal.
The upper laterally-projecting line of the letter Z has a distinct curve, while the lower line thereof is substantially horizontal.
The lower-case letters having perpendicular lines likewise include the characteristic terminals before described.
In the lower-case letter s the left-hand terminal is more nearly horizontal than in the corresponding upper-case letter. The terminal of the lower-case letter t extends only to the right of the perpendicular line of said letter, and the cross-line near the top thereof is inclined downwardly from left to right. The curved terminal at the upper end of the perpendicular lines of the lower-case letter 11 extends only to the left of said perpendiculars.
The letters employed in forming the diphthongs, as well as the numerals included in the font, also have characteristic terminals above referred to. The dot-like characters employed in forming the colon, semicolon, exclamation, and interrogation points are not circular in shape, but each is provided with a centrally-arranged indentation in its lower side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a font of printing-type, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD EVERARD.
Witnesses:

HENRY HAWKINS BURROWS.
