DESIGN FOR FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.

Specification forming part of Design No. 10,673, dated May 7,'1878; application filed April 13, 1878.

Be it known that I, RICHARD SMITH, (assignor to MACKELLAR, SMrTHs & JoRDAN,) of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing- Type, of which the following is a specification:

The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographie impression, to which reference is made; and consists of a script letter.

The design shown differs from the patented design of Andrew Little for what is known as Payson script, in that in the A the curved portion of the letter upon the left hand is carried higher up and crosses both the left-hand and righthand portions of the letter.

In the letter B the left-hand portion of the letter consists of the plain inclined line, from which, upon the left hand, about centrally, proceeds the curved line, as shown, while the portion of the letter upon the upper right hand of the inclined line is formed of a single curved line.

In the letter C the lower portion of the letter upon the right hand is formed of a single curved portion, and single curved portions characterize the letters in contradistinction to double curved portions in the Payson script; or the curved portions may be described as being shorter and not so ornamented as in the case of the Payson.

It also differs in the same respect from the Penman 7 script, patented April 23, 1872, and shown in Bruces specimen-book, in which many of the letters are ornamented by curved portions Within the curved portions proper of the letters.

In the letter H the right-hand portion of the letter consists of the inclined parts curved at the upper termination toward the right. This feature also characterizes the letter N.

In the letter K the lower right-hand part of the letter is much longer than the upper righthand portion.

In the letter R the left-hand portion of the letter consists of the plain inclined part.

In the letter U the left-hand portion of the letter terminates in a curved part, extending below the letter, and crossing the right-hand portion of the letter, extending down and meeting it.

The upper right-hand portion of the V terminates in the waving termination, and is ornamented by the open dot, as shown.

Having now described my design, what I claim as new is The design for a font of printing-type, as shown and described.
