Abstract

681,404. Closures for containers. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. July 11, 1950 [Aug. 2, 1949], No. 17386/50. Class 125(iii) A closure for containers such as drums 12 comprises a capsule 1 having a skirt 2 provided with a tear-off strip defined by a weakening line 31 extending for at least substantially half the periphery of the skirt parallel to the skirt edge and upwardly extending lines 33 leading from the skirt edge 5 at points 34 adjacent tongues 8 having holes or slots 10 for engagement by a tool, the weakening lines being formed by scoring the interior surface of the skirt. In modifications, a gap is left in the line 31 adjacent the acute angle formed by the lines 31, 33 or, as in Fig. 9, the weakening line 44 has curved parts 51, 52 running to the skirt edge which is provided with tabs 47 to act as retaining tongues after the capsule has been once removed. In Fig. 6, the container 12 is formed with a flange 13 accommodating a female screwed part 14 the top 26 of which is swaged over the flange 13. A screw plug 18 has a top boss 23 engaging with a domed part 4 of the capsule and clamping a gasket 21 against the part 14. A gasket 11 is accommodated on a step 3 of the capsule and is deformed against the part 26. The tear line of the capsule is located at the part of greatest diameter of part 26 and at the lower level of the gasket 11 when uncompressed.
