Abstract

1303436 Container closures R W BIRCH 2 Dec 1970 [8 Sept 1969] 44270/69 Heading B8T An elastomeric closure cap 24 is screwthreaded for engagement with the neck 11 of a container and has a resilient flange portion 25 to provide a seal. As the cap 24 is screwed on to the neck 11, the flange 25 abuts the top 31 of the neck and becomes deformed until, in the fully-seated position (Fig. 3), the flange 25 forms a seal with both the edge 22 and the top 31 of the neck. The seal is improved by the air pocket 30 which is formed. In another embodiment, the flange may form part of a snap-on cap (Fig. 4, not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 6, the flange forms a seal in a tamper-proof cap, in which the upper portion 38 is separated from the lower portion 37 by a series of circumferentially-tapered bridging portions 40 alternating with slots (41). As the cap 36 is unscrewed the portions 40 are torn leaving the lower portion 37 on the neck 11. The invention could form the inner member of an outer closure cap, for example a metal crown cap.
