Abstract

1,063,610. Stoppers. A. R. RAUSING. March 3, 1966 [March 20, 1965], No. 9346/66. Heading B8T. A stopper for a container has a tubular plug 5 connected to a lid 3<SP>1</SP> by a joint 12 at the base of an annular recess 11 in the plug. At least one slot or weakening line (32), Fig. 1 (not shown), is provided in the lid, starting at the base of a pulltab 4, Fig. 2, and running radially across the lid towards the joint 12, to facilitate tearing of the stopper around the line of the joint 12 when the tab 4 is pulled upwards. A further weakening groove 34 may be provided along a short annular region of the inner surface of the lid adjacent the joint 12, and opposite the tab 4. The stopper, which may be moulded integrally from plastics material, carries, on the plug 5, a flange 8 having a bevelled surface 9, whereby it may be engaged beneath an inwardly-turned lip 6 of a container 1, to seal the container until it is opened by tearing as described. Further flanges 30, 10 on the plug 5 serve respectively to improve the seal of the container and to prevent the plug from falling into the container after opening. In a further embodiment two weakening grooves (32a), (32b), Fig. 3 (not shown), are provided on the lid, running parallel to the edges of the tab 4, a groove (34a) running annularly adjacent the joint 12 on the underside of the lid, between the ends of the two grooves (32a), (32b). The grooves 34, (34a) may alternatively be on the upper surface of the lid.
