Abstract

258,695. Bennett, G. H. July 8, 1925. Vacuum closures. - A can, box or other container closed by a lid 3 having a skirt 4' adapted to fit over the mouth of the container is formed with a horizontally outstanding flange 2 located below its mouth and a groove 7 adjacent the flange and adapted to receive one edge of a stretched elastic packing ring 6 which normally projects upwardly and outwardly in the path of an outstanding horizontal flange 5 on the skirt 4 and is compressed by it against the flange 2 when the container is closed under a vacuum. The flange 2 is formed by flattening a bead on the body of the container between two dies. In a modification, a flattened part is formed between the flange 5 and the skirt 4 to adapt it for use with a packing-ring of circular or like section. The packing ring may be provided with an outstanding tab which may be pulled to break the vacuum. Specification 246,277 is referred to.
