Abstract
525,892. Vacuum closures; closure caps. WHITE CAP CO. March 2, 1939, No. 6871. Convention date, July 7, 1938. [Class 125 (iii)] A vacuum closure convertible into a screw cap for use on jars having necks with projecting inclined ledges 24 has a top portion containing the usual sealing gasket 14 and a depending annular skirt portion 11 having preformed therein a number of slits 15 which, in the first instance, are located outwardly beyond the circumference of the ledges 24 so that the closure may be completely seated on and removed from the receptacle neck by longitudinal movement alone, whatever the relative positions of the slits and the ledge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and are subsequently displaced inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, so that they may engage under the ledges 24 when the closure is reapplied and screwed round. The edges of the slits 15 forming the depressions 16 are slightly turned inwardly as shown in Fig. 4, so as to present a smooth external surface. The neck of the jar is preferably formed with a ledge 22 so as to leave a space between the bend 12 of the skirt 11 and the ledge for the insertion of a prising tool for initially removing the closure.
